Leonidas, mit Amelie Paradini aus einer der reichsten Wiener Familien vermählt und Sektionschef im österreichischen Unterrichtsministerium, erhält im Oktober 1936, wenige Tage nach seinem fünfzigsten Geburtstag, einen privaten Brief in blaßblauer Frauenschrift. Darin bittet ihn die Jüdin Vera Wormser, mit der ihn vor achtzehn Jahren, gleich zu Beginn seiner Ehe, während einer Dienstreise nach Heidelberg ein Liebesverhältnis verbunden hat, um Protektion für einen „jungen begabten Mann". Dieser müsse Deutschland „aus den allgemein bekannten Gründen" verlassen und könne seine Gymnasialstudien dort nicht fortsetzen. Für Leonidas, einen der ranghöchsten Beamten Österreichs, dessen „volle Souveränität" Hitler-Deutschland im Juli-Abkommen 1936 nur formal anerkannt hat, bricht eine Welt zusammen. Axel Corti hat die „Blaßblaue Frauenschrift" 1983 historisch detailgetreu verfilmt. Matthias Pape (Technische Hochschule Aachen) zeigt in seinem Kommentar, daß die Psyche von Leonidas eine Parabel für die Historie des Jahres 1936 ist. Werfel hat mit der Novelle, die er in der Kolonie emigrierter deutscher und österreichischer Schriftsteller im südfranzösischen Sanary-sur-Mer im Jahr 1940 verfasst hat, die tieferen Gründe für den Untergang des von Bundeskanzler Dollfuß errichteten Ständestaats im kulturellen Gedächtnis Österreichs festschreiben wollen. Wilhelm Brauneder (Universität Wien) kommentiert die literarische Widerspiegelung der verfassungsrechtlichen Gestalt des „Christlichen Ständestaats" (1934-1938). Kein anderes dichterisches Kunstwerk hat dieses Verfassungsgebilde sozialpsychologisch vergleichbar eingehend erfaßt wie Werfels knappe Novelle.
