Excerpt from Intimate Pages of Mexican History This book, concerning the four Presidents of Mexico whom I have personally known, contains only what I have seen myself, or what, by word of mouth and eye in eye, I have learned from those intimately connected with the men and events of which it speaks. In the chapters relating to Huerta there will be found, however, some considerations of the phenomena presented by Hispano-Indian politics, which are as distinct from those of the United States as are the flora and fauna of the two countries. Without some study of them, Mexico will continue to be a Terra Ignota, resembling, on any chart prepared for American use, those portions of the globe in seventeenth century maps represented by blank spaces embellished with scroll-like patterns. But the tides which ebb and flood under the Mexican moon wash shores whereon the laws of climate and of race, though so diverse, operate as definitely as do our own. These differences are shown in great relief by the figure of Huerta, in whom race, environment, and tradition present themselves in the most specific form, for he always ran true to type, and acted and reacted along secular lines. Excerpt from Thirty Years With the Mexicans: In Peace and Revolution American readers all possible light upon the Mexic people and their problems. Of all literature, that is the most useful which is the result of sympathetic and close personal relations. The writer has had the privi lege of travelling a little in Mexico with Dr. Case, particularly in those regions ofgiihughua which were most recently his home, and can give personal testi mony to the intimate friendship existing between Dr. Case and the Mexican people, and to the heroism with which he went on about his accustomed life in Mexico during years when the northern states were overrun with disorganized bands of soldiers and outlaws and life there was full of danger. His book presents a series of views of Mexican life, the veracity of which is apparent to any one who has visited Mexico, and his conclusions with respect to the Mexican people and their future are the thoughts of a man of close powers of observation, sympathetic insight, and long experi ence in analyzing the characters of men of another race and heritage from ourselves. Excerpt from The Near Side of the Mexican Question There are two sides to nearly every matter and the ever-present Mexican question offers no exception to this general rule. The side of this question of which we hear least is that lying north of the international line, yet this aspect of the situation is of vital concern to every citizen in the United States. The future of our country is unalterably and inextricably bound up with the future of Mexico and the Mexicans. Every passing year but adds emphasis to this fact. The multitude of Mexicans, who' have found refuge within our borders during the last decade, added to the not inconsiderable spanish-american element resident for a much longer period here, forms a group which has become well-nigh indispensable to our national life and one with which we must reckon in the days to come. It is to help the reader understand something of the intimacy of our relationship to Mexico and the large contribution which Mexicans and spanish-americans are already making to our national life that this book is written. If it helps at all toward a sympathetic ap proach to the common problems which Mexicans and Americans must work out side by side in the days ahead, it will have accomplished its purpose. Excerpt from The Story of Mexico: Complete Authoritative Up-to-Date Giving a Comperhensive History of the Romantic and Beautiful Land From the Days of Montezuma and the Empire of the Aztecs to the Present Time The story of Mexico has been one full of mystery and romance in its early days, of cruel treatment of the natives during the long period succeeding the Spanish conquest, and of restlessness and turbulence, since it was wrested from the control of Spain. It was inhabited in prehistoric times by Indian tribes which had attained the highest civilization ever reached by the Indian race. In architectural skill the Mexican tribes were equaled by those Of Peru, but they surpassed the latter by the development Of a mitten language, a stage of progress never reached by the Indians of Peru. Excerpt from Here and There in Mexico Of all that extensive Empire which one. Acknowledged the authority of Spain in the New World, no portion, for interest and im portance, can be compared with Mexico - and this equally whether we compare the variety of its soil and climate; the inexhaustible stores of its mineral wealth; its scenery, grand and picturesque beyond example; the character of its ancient inhabitants, not only far surpassing in intelligence that of the North American races, but reminding us, by their monuments, of the primitive civilizations of Egypt and Hindustan; or, lastly, the peculiar circum stances oi the Conquest, adventurous and romantic as any legend devised by Norman or Italian bard of chivalry. Excerpt from Beyond the Mexican Sierras These are Prescott's words of introduction to that fascinating classic, The Conquest of Mexico. In accurate as he may have been in his estimate Of the extent and magnificence Of the Aztec Empire, Pres cott made no exaggeration in his measure of the country itself. Indeed, I am tempted to enlarge his comparison, and assert that in all the two continents Of the Western Hemisphere there is no area Of equal extent that can approach Mexico in wealth of natural resources, variety Of climate, grandeur Of scenery, prehistoric ruins, and romantic history. Excerpt from Papers Relating to Mexico At present, however, we are waiting for the beginning of the evacuation. When that beginning shall have come, the government will cheerfully hear sug gestions from any quarter calculated to reassure the restoration of tranquillity, peace, and constitutional domestic government in Mexico; but until we shall be able to refer to such a beginning any proceedings towards negotiation would only tend to confound public Opinion in the United States, and to render the situation of Mexico more complicated.
