Musings on the Dark is inspired in myth, superstition, and old wives' tales. Add a pinch of truth; fact and fiction coexist in this collection of fantastic accounts. Author Silvia Font sifts the mediocre to find the exquisite, be it darkly humorous or frankly macabre. She believes that wandering away from the light of reality into the dim unknown may actually protect our sanity, or at least provide some poetry in a world of inescapable bad news and pitiless technology. So beauty will marry the beast, and they will have a child. Some of these stories will make you smile. Others, more often than not, will creep you out.

The Library of America presents “the first truly dependable collection of Poe’s poetry and tales”—featuring well-known works like ‘The Raven’ and ‘The Fall of the House of Usher’, plus a selection of rarely published writings (New York Review of Books). Edgar Allan Poe’s poetry is famous both for the musicality of “To Helen” and “The City in the Sea” and for the hypnotic, incantatory rhythms of “The Raven” and “Ulalume.” “The Fall of the House of Usher” and “The Cask of Amontillado” show his mastery of Gothic horror; “The Pit and the Pendulum” is a classic of terror and suspense. Poe invented the modern detective story in “The Murders in the Rue Morgue,” and developed the form of science fiction that was to influence, among others, Jules Verne and Thomas Pynchon. Poe was also adept at the humorous sketch of playful jeu d'esprit, such as “X-ing a Paragraph” or “Never Bet the Devil Your Head.” All his stories reveal his high regard for technical proficiency and for what he called “rationation.” Poe’s fugitive early poems, stories rarely collected (such as “Bon-Bon,” “King Pest,” “Mystification,” and “The Duc De L'Omelette”), his only attempt at drama, “Politian”—these and much more are included in this comprehensive collection, presented chronologically to show Poe’s development toward Eureka: A Prose Poem, his culminating vision of an indeterminate universe, printed here for the first time as Poe revised it and intended it should stand. A special feature of this volume is the care taken to select an authoritative text of each work. The printing and publishing history of every item has been investigated in order to choose a version that incorporates all of Poe’s own revisions without reproducing the errors or changes introduced by later editors. Here, then, is one of America’s and the world's most disturbing, powerful, and inventive writers. LIBRARY OF AMERICA is an independent nonprofit cultural organization founded in 1979 to preserve our nation’s literary heritage by publishing, and keeping permanently in print, America’s best and most significant writing. The Library of America series includes more than 300 volumes to date, authoritative editions that average 1,000 pages in length, feature cloth covers, sewn bindings, and ribbon markers, and are printed on premium acid-free paper that will last for centuries.

Ghosts and demons are integral to folklore all over the world. India is no exception in that case. You may find the reference given to them in many literatures on religion and philosophy. When we look a little more in-depth at the subject, we will find some distinguished ghostly figures with some specific powers (or you can say traits) assigned to them. In this book, you will find tales of ghosts inspired by real encounters experienced by certain people. Some specific ghost figures have also been described at the end of the book. A short story from the book: In the middle of the night in December, a man driving a car on a deserted highway spotted a lonely woman asking for help. The man stopped the car and asked what the problem was. She explained that she lived in a nearby village; her husband had left her there 2 hours ago when they were returning from the town on a motorcycle. He had promised he would return soon, but still hadn’t. She wanted to return to the house as soon as possible and ask about her husband. The driver agreed to give her a lift home. The woman sat on the passenger side and he began to drive. They spoke for a few minutes, then there was silence. About half an hour later, the man asked, "how far away is your village now?" There was no response. He repeated the question, and then turned his head to the passenger. He was astonished to discover that the lady had disappeared. The vanishing spirit has been a popular subject for the tales of ghosts found across entire India. Many people claim that they have encountered a person vanishing from their car.

"A true story more incredible than fiction." —Kevin Baker, author of Striver's Row In George Appo's world, child pickpockets swarmed the crowded streets, addicts drifted in furtive opium dens, and expert swindlers worked the lucrative green-goods game. On a good night Appo made as much as a skilled laborer made in a year. Bad nights left him with more than a dozen scars and over a decade in prisons from the Tombs and Sing Sing to the Matteawan State Hospital for the Criminally Insane, where he reunited with another inmate, his father. The child of Irish and Chinese immigrants, Appo grew up in the notorious Five Points and Chinatown neighborhoods. He rose as an exemplar of the "good fellow," a criminal who relied on wile, who followed a code of loyalty even in his world of deception. Here is the underworld of the New York that gave us Edith Wharton, Boss Tweed, Central Park, and the Brooklyn Bridge.

This collection opens with marginalized responses to the highly politicized Cinderella traditions in the Anglophone world. In the United States, Cinderella was incorporated into the gendered narrative of the American Dream and narratives of empire in the colonial world, particularly in the mid-1800s. Marginalized writers have responded to these nationalistic colonial traditions in two distinctive ways: clever Cinderellas who negotiate a broken system or passive Cinderellas who die as anti-heroes in disenchanting fairy tales. This dual tradition of marginalized Cinderellas is also apparent across the Anglophone world. Potential texts include the out-of-print works of Sinèad de Valera, excerpts from the novels of Hannah Crafts, Jessie Fauset, and Julia Kavanagh, along with dramas by Ann Devlin, and collected oral tales.
