Il significato radicale che il «nulla» ha assunto nella riflessione filosofica occidentale accompagna come un'ombra non solo questa forma di pensiero, ma l'intero tragitto della nostra civiltà. Radice prima dell'angoscia, il nulla turba anche e soprattutto per il suo carattere sommamente ambiguo: già Platone, infatti, osserva che pensare il nulla e parlare del nulla significa pensare qualcosa e parlare di qualcosa – come se il nemico che si ha di fronte si sdoppiasse, ingannandoci sulla sua identità. Questa nozione spaesante, che esige di essere interpretata alla luce delle forme più rigorose della speculazione, è stata affrontata da Severino a partire da "La Struttura originaria" (1958) e fino a "La morte e la terra" (2011): a tali due opere, e alla seconda in particolare, si ricollega "Intorno al senso del nulla", dove da un lato si mostra come l'ambiguità sia ben più profonda di quanto possa sembrare e dall'altro si indagano «le condizioni che rendono possibile la via di uscita». Approfondimento quanto mai necessario, giacché se si rinunciasse a discutere le aporie suscitate dal senso del nulla resterebbe in sospeso la stessa tesi di fondo del pensiero di Severino: che l'uomo e ogni altro ente «sono da sempre salvi dal nulla».

This book argues that David Foster Wallace failed to provide a response to the existential predicament of our time. Wallace wanted to confront despair through art, but he remained trapped, and his entrapment originates in the "existentialist contradiction": the impossibility of affirming the meaningfulness of life and an ethics of compassion while believing in free will. To substantiate this thesis, the analysis reads Wallace in conversation with the existentialist philosophers and writers who influenced him: Søren Kierkegaard, Fyodor Dostoevsky, Martin Heidegger, Jean-Paul Sartre, Albert Camus, and Ludwig Wittgenstein. It compares his non-fiction with the sociologies of Christopher Lasch, Zygmunt Bauman, Ulrich Beck and Elisabeth Beck-Gernsheim, and Anthony Giddens. And it finds inspiration in Giacomo Leopardi, Friedrich Nietzsche, and Emanuele Severino to conclude that the philosophy which pervades Wallace’s works entails despair and represents the essence of our civilization’s interpretation of the world.

In 1969, Emanuele Severino underwent a Vatican trial for the 'fundamental incompatibility' between his thought and the Christian doctrine, and was removed from his position as professor of philosophy at the Catholic University in Milan. The Essence of Nihilism published in 1972, was the first book to follow his expulsion, and to firmly establish Severino's preeminent position within the constellation of contemporary philosophy. In this groundbreaking book, Severino reinterprets the history of Western philosophy as the unfolding of 'the greatest folly', that is, of the belief that 'things come out of nothing and fall back into nothing'. According to Severino, such a typically Western understanding of reality has produced a belief in the radical 'nothingness' of things. This, in turn has justified the treatment of the world as an object of exploitation, degradation and destruction. To move beyond Western nihilism, suggests Severino, we must first of all 'return to Parmenides'.
