El libro Introducción a la Química Orgánica de los profesores Brian L. Yates y Rodrigo Paredes, profesores del departamento de Química de la Universidad del Valle, fue por muchos años uno de los textos más populares en los cursos iniciales de esta asignatura en las universidades y en colegios de bachillerato. El doctor Yates, un excelente químico orgánico, primer director de la maestría en química, se retiró de esta institución para regresar a su natal Inglaterra en 1974. El doctor Rodrigo Paredes, uno de los fundadores de la carrera de Química en la Universidad del Valle, continuó su labor docente e investigativa por muchos años hasta su jubilación en 1995. Sus logros en investigación fueron reconocidos en 1982 con el otorgamiento del Premio Nacional de Ciencias, Alejandro Angel Escobar, por el descubrimiento de un nuevo método para sintetizar ciclopropenos 3,3-dicarboxilatos. Hemos querido rescatar este texto, que hace parte de la memoria histórica de nuestro Departamento, como un homenaje a estos dos científicos, formadores de varias generaciones de Químicos en la Universidad del Valle. La presente edición está ampliada, corregida y equiparada con los nuevos desarrollos en química orgánica. En esta entrega, sacamos a la luz la primera parte que contiene las discusiones de varios temas, desde hidrocarburos hasta éteres y epóxidos.
