Los antecedentes más antiguos sobre la divulgación de las ciencias en los medios gráficos de la Argentina se remontan a la última década de la colonia, cuando apareció el Telégrafo Mercantil Rural, Político-Económico e Historiógrafo del Río de la Plata, el primer periódico impreso del virreinato. El número 1 del Telégrafo Mercantil salió 1 ° de abril de 1801 y su editor fue el español Francisco Antonio Cabello y Mesa, quien ya había publicado en Lima un periódico similar. Junto con algunos de sus colaboradores, Cabello fundó la Sociedad Patriótica-Literaria y Económica, uno de cuyos objetivos era editar una publicación que "concurriendo sino a instruir y cultivar al pueblo le dé (a lo menos) un entrenamiento mental e inspire inclinación a las ciencias y artes ... Para dar cumplida cuenta del tratamiento recibido por la lengua en el discurso de divulgacion de los temas cientificos a traves de los medios de comunicacion, los autores de este libro parten de la consideracion de algunos aspectos fundamentales relativos a la divulgacion de la ciencia y el discurso periodistico para centrarse a continuacion en el analisis pormenorizado de la configuracion linguistica del discurso de divulgacion cientifica y las variantes motivadas por la naturaleza de los generos periodisticos a traves de los que se da a conocer. De la lectura de la obra se desprende que, si bien es cierto que la lengua dispone de un registro especifico para la transmision de los conocimientos y avances cientificos, en el periodismo cientifico se produce una reformulacion del mensaje, en consonancia con los condicionamientos del genero elegido y el contexto social y cultural de los destinatarios, como consecuencia de lo cual la nueva perspectiva pasa a un primer plano y los contenidos cientificos propiamente dichos experimentan un cierto grado de ensombrecimiento."
