"The purpose of this thesis was to introduce a standard method for designing efficient and sustainable packages to the packaging industry. This thesis has focused on how a standardized process has helped to design efficient, cost-effective and sustainable packages in the food industry. The standardized process used was the lean six-sigma methodology called DMADV. The DMADV methodology has been implemented for inventing and innovating major new features of existing products, services or processes. The main objective of this research was to: 1. Introduce the lean six-sigma DMADV methodology to the packaging industry. 2. Show how a DMADV methodology can be implemented for designing efficient and sustainable packages that will satisfy the consumer and would have less environmental impact."--Abstract.

Design for Six Sigma (DFSS), or the Six Sigma DMADV process (Define, Measure, Analyze, Design, Verify), is an improvement system used to develop new processes or products at Six Sigma quality levels. It also can be employed if a current process requires more than just incremental improvement. It is executed by Six Sigma Green Belts and Six Sigma Black Belts, and overseen by Six Sigma Master Black Belts.

The Lean Six Sigma methodology is being applied extensively to tackle many quality related issues in many processes of today's industries. Various companies have benefited greatly from the adoption of Six Sigma and Lean engineering concepts since their introduction, and continue to do so. The DMAIC method that is traditionally adopted in the implementation of the Lean Six Sigma methodology has proven to yield cost-saving results in most cases. Yet, industries have found that just improvement of existent process and products to reduce defects, does not quench the customer's growing thirst for greater quality. In order to tackle variation and defects pro actively, the initiative to achieve Six Sigma level of quality (3.4 DPMO) or greater is being infused into the design of new products using the Design for Six Sigma (DFSS) methodology, through systematic approaches such as DMADV. This research integrates the DMADV approach into the classic DMAIC methodology through a framework, DMARC, which details the improvement an existing process through re-design. It provides a systematic approach to avoid the mis-direction of projects into following the path of continued improvement of existing processes that are deemed to be beyond such efforts. A real-life industrial case: a successfully completed Lean Six Sigma project, tackling the downtime of the Launch Pad Meteorological System at Launch Pads 39A and B at the Kennedy Space Center, was studied to exemplify the possibility of the achievement of greater results from the implementation of the DMARC framework.

Six Sigma provides an overarching concept, methodology and the tools to improve quality and customer satisfaction, thereby increasing profitability. This book moves beyond applying Six Sigma to already exisiting products and services to quantifying, designing and measuring success in from the start. Most new ideas are launched on the market without taking customer needs into account. Failings are discovered in the marketplace where products or services then have to be refined and redesigned - indeed perhaps some 80% of new products or services will fail altogether. By using the Six Sigma approach to designing new products and services the chances of failure are greatly reduced. Six Sigma encourages innovation within a controlled framework, leading to better products and services brought to the marketplace more quickly. This book aims to provide a detailed resource of guidance and inspiration covering all the aspects of business strategy, product/service design, project management and execution necessary for the successful introduction of new products and services, all under the auspices of a customer-focused Six Sigma approach. Moreover it provides a tangible way of measuring satisfaction and the success of the new.

"This thesis is a result of my interest in implementing Lean Six Sigma into Indian packaging companies because the Indian industry is growing at 18-20% annually (Samal, 2010). This growth rate is expected to triple in the next five years. With USA outsourcing to foreign nations this substantial growth, as I envision the USA companies who are seeking India packaging materials will benefit from my original approach for converting the Indian packaging industry using Lean Six Sigma. I have a strong personal and professional desire to improve the manufacturing within India. It is the country in which I grew up and where my family currently lives and works. The main objective of this research is to accomplish several major tasks: 1) Introduce a Lean Six Sigma Green Belt DMAIC methodology to an India packaging company and 2) Show how a Lean Six Sigma Green Belt would implement the DMAIC approach in a small Indian packaging company that plans to do business within the USA boundaries and 3) Utilize this packaging company as a model for other India packaging companies to follow if their plans are to sell quality packaging materials to the USA companies."--Abstract.

Design for Lean Six Sigmais the only book that employs a "road-map" approach to DFSS, which allows corporate management to understand where they are in the process and to integrate DFSS methodology more fully into their overall business strategy. This is a similar approach to that used by Forrest Breyfogle in his successful book: "Implementing Six Sigma, 2E". This approach will allow corporate management to understand where they are in the process and to integrate DFSS methodology more fully into the overall business strategy. Another important aspect of this book is its coverage of DFSS implementation in a broad range of industries including service and manufacturing, plus the use of actual cases throughout.

Design for Six Sigma (DFSS) is an innovative continuous improvement methodology for designing new products, processes, and services by integrating Lean and Six Sigma principles. This book will explain how the DFSS methodology is used to design robust products, processes, or services right the first time by using the voice of the customer to meet Six Sigma performance. Robust designs are insensitive to variation and provide consistent performance in the hands of the customer. DFSS is used to meet customer needs by understanding their requirements, considering current process capability, identifying and reducing gaps, and verifying predictions to develop a robust design. This book offers: Methodology on how to implement DFSS in various industries Practical examples of the use of DFSS Sustainability utilizing Lean Six Sigma techniques and Lean product development Innovative designs using DFSS with concept generation Case studies for implementing the DFSS methodology Design for Six Sigma (DFSS) enables organizations to develop innovative designs. In order to redesign an existing process or design a new process, the success is dependent on a rigorous process and methodology. DFSS ensures that there are minimal defects in the introduction of new products, processes, or services. The authors have compiled all of the tools necessary for implementation of a practical approach though innovation.
