Introduction to Microprocessors introduces the practicing engineer to microprocessors and covers topics ranging from components for information processing to hardware structures and addressing modes, along with support software and structured programming. General principles are illustrated with examples from commercial microprocessors. Comprised of 10 chapters, this book begins with an overview of digital information processing systems and their components, including logic circuits and large scale integration (LSI) digital circuits. A basic microprocessor structure is then described, and case studies highlighting the possible range of applications for the microprocessor are presented, from student projects and interferometry to traffic light simulation. Subsequent chapters focus on the addressing modes that are provided in the instruction set of the microprocessor; the processor-memory switch; and the software necessary to support the development of microprocessor implementations. The book also considers development systems before concluding with some examples and their solutions. This monograph is intended primarily for practicing engineers and engineering students.

The 8085 is a microprocessor that has 8 bits and is made using N-MOS technology. It features 16-bit address bus and consequently can address up to 216 = 65536 bytes (64KB) memory addresses via A0-A15. AD0–AD7 are multiplexed over the first eight lines of the address bus and the first eight lines of the data bus, respectively. The eight lines labelled D0 through D7 make up the data bus. It enables external interrupt request.8085 contains of 16-bit programmed counter (PC) and stack pointer (SP) (SP). Six 8-bit general purpose register grouped in pairs: BC, DE, HL. It functions at 3 MHz, 5 MHz, and 6 MHz on the Serial in/Serial out Port and needs a power source of +5V to function properly. It is protected by a DIP enclosure with 40 pins (Dual in line package.

This book is intended for a first course on microprocessor-based systems design for engineering and computer science students. It starts with an introduction of the fundamental concepts, followed by a practical path that guides readers to developing a basic microprocessor example, using a step-by-step problem-solving approach. Then, a second microprocessor is presented, and readers are guided to the implementation and programming of microcomputer systems based on it. The numerous worked examples and solved exercises allow a better understanding and a more effective learning. All the examples and exercises were developed on Deeds (Digital Electronics Education and Design Suite), which is freely available online on a website developed and maintained by the authors. The discussed examples can be simulated by using Deeds and the solutions to all exercises and examples can be found on that website. Further, in the last part of this book, different microprocessor-based systems, which have been specifically thought for educational purposes, are extensively developed, simulated and implemented on FPGA-based platforms. This textbook draws on the authors’ extensive experience in teaching and developing learning materials for bachelor’s and master’s engineering courses. It can be used for self-study as well, and even independently from the simulator. Thanks to the learning-by-doing approach and the plentiful examples, no prior knowledge in computer programming is required.
