Excerpt from Tusculan Disputations, I, II, V: With Introduction and Notes The fact that the Tusculan Disputations are read less than was formerly the case is perhaps due in part to the lack of an edition in English suitable for general classroom use. If so, it is hoped that the present volume may meet this need. With proper' helps, Books I and II are not too diffi cult for even the early years of the college course, and in content they are admirably adapted for the work of that period. Certainly no one of Cicero's longer philosophical treatises now extant can rival the Tusculan Disputatz'ons in human interest; and the fact that in this work Cicero joins himself to the immortal band who caught something of Socrates' faith, thus leading a revolt against the tide of gross materialism which was sweeping over Italy, is a. Circumstance that entitles him to a general and sympathetic hearing. With this thought in mind the notes on Books I and II have been adapted somewhat more carefully to the needs of students in the first two years of the college course. The Fifth Tusculan Disputation is the finest of the five books, its nearest rival being the First (already edited in this series). The middle three books, represented in this edition by the Second, are, as the author clearly intended, less elevated, though still showing Cicero's flair for elegant and lively exposition, and providing much valuable information about the teaching of the main Hellenistic philosophical schools, especially the Stoics. They argue that the perfect human life, or complete human well-being, that of the 'wise man', is unaffected by physical and mental distress or extremes of emotion. Against this background the Fifth puts the positive, mainly Stoic, case that virtue, moral goodness, is alone and of itself sufficient for complete well-being, providing an impressive climax to the whole work.
