Cet ouvrage très-estimé des Orienî talistes, et qui mérite certainement la réputation qu'il acquise, m'a paru devoir ètre utilement répandu en Algerie, car, dans les huit sections qui le composent, on trouve résumé avec non moins de méthode et de concision' que d'exacti tude, tout ce qu'il est nécessaire de savoir pour se faire uuejuste idée des institutions et des moeurs des peuples musulmans. En un mot, c'est l'appen dice obligé de toutes les traductions du Coran, dont la lecture est toujours fastidieuse, peu pro fitable et mème sujette à égarer dans bien des cas, si l'on ne possède déjà certaines connais sances préparatoires.\'1j La traduction anglaise du Coran a été publiée avec le Discours préliminaire, au commence ment du dix - huitième siècle, puisque G. Sale, son auteur, né vers 4680, et l'un des principaux membres de la société formée à Londres pour la publication de l'histoire universelle est mort en 4736. Depuis il en a été fait plusieurs edi tions dont la dernière qui a paru en 4895, est celle dont je me suis servi. Dès l'année 4770 le Discours préliininaire été traduit en français et publié à Amsterdam sous le titre de Observa tions historiques et critiques sur le Mahométisme, en tète d'une nouvelle édition du Coran de André Duryer. Eloigné de la France depuis long temps, je n'ai jamais eu entre les mains cette ancienne traduction, qui ne se trouve plus facilement dans le commerce, mais c'est la mème, à coup sûr, qui a été réimprimée en 4840, sous le mème titre, avec la traduction du Coran par M.
