Excerpt from La Petite Ville: Edited With Introduction, Notes and Vocabulary This is the first of Picard's comedies to be edited for classroom use. It is to be hoped that it will prove profitable to those who choose to read it. "La Petite Ville" is simple and entertaining, and may be read easily at the beginning of the second year of French. The text used is that of the original edition of 1801. Several printer's mistakes have been corrected, and necessary changes made in spelling, capitalization, and punctuation. In a few places stage directions have been added. These changes have been made after careful comparison with the edition of 1821, which was published under the supervision of the author, and the later editions of Moland and Fournier. The notes have been made copious in an effort to show how faithfully the play reflects the society of France just after the Revolution. Acknowledgment is due to Professor O. G. Guerlac, of Cornell University, for valuable suggestions in the preparation of this volume, and likewise to Dr. M. B. Garrett, of the University of Michigan, for assistance in finding certain references in the Cornell University library.
