Networks pervade social and economic life, and they play a prominent role in explaining a huge variety of social and economic phenomena. Standard economic theory did not give much credit to the role of networks until the early 1990s, but since then the study of the theory of networks has blossomed. At the heart of this research is the idea that the pattern of connections between individual rational agents shapes their actions and determines their rewards. The importance of connections has in turn motivated the study of the very processes by which networks are formed. In Connections, Sanjeev Goyal puts contemporary thinking about networks and economic activity into context. He develops a general framework within which this body of research can be located. In the first part of the book he demonstrates that location in a network has significant effects on individual rewards and that, given this, it is natural that individuals will seek to form connections to move the network in their favor. This idea motivates the second part of the book, which develops a general theory of network formation founded on individual incentives. Goyal assesses the robustness of current research findings and identifies the substantive open questions. Written in a style that combines simple examples with formal models and complete mathematical proofs, Connections is a concise and self-contained treatment of the economic theory of networks, one that should become the natural source of reference for graduate students in economics and related disciplines.

Family Connections written by D. H. J. Morgan and has been published by Polity this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 1996-08-27 with Family & Relationships categories.

Family Connections is a major new introduction to the study of the family, written by one of the leading scholars in the field. Morgan shows that the study of the family is not a peripheral concern of sociology but rather lies at the heart of sociological theory and research. Family Connections takes the reader through the established debates, such as the relation between family life and the world of work and employment, the impact of class and stratification on the family, and the relevance of gender. Morgan then examines some newer areas of social inquiry, including the sociology of the body, time and space, food, and the home. The relevance of the family to more general topics of sociological theory - such as postmodernity, citizenship, consumption and risk - is discussed. The emphasis throughout is on family relationships as processes which are fluid, complex and open to change.

Many of our current social problems have been attributed to the breakdown or loss of community as a place and to the fragmentation of connections due to an extreme value of individualism in the Western world, particularly in the United States. Not all scholars and researchers agree that individualism and technology are the primary culprits in the loss of community as it existed in the middle decade of the 20th century. Nonetheless, people exist in groups, and connections are vital to their existence and in the daily performance of activities. The second edition of the Sociology of Community Connections will identify and help students understand community connectedness in the present and future.
