Excerpt from Introduction to Higher Algebra AN American student approaching the higher parts of mathe maties usually finds himself unfamiliar with most of the main facts of algebra, to say nothing of their proofs. Thus he has only a rudimentary knowledge of systems of linear equations, and he knows next to nothing about the subject of quadratic forms. Students in this condition, if they receive any algebraic instruction at all, are usually plunged into the detailed study of some special branch of algebra, such as the theory of equations or the theory of invariants, where their lack of real mastery of algebraic principles makes it almost inevitable that the work done should degenerate to the level of purely formal manipulations. It is the object of the present book to introduce the student to higher algebra in such a way that he shall, on the, one hand, learn what is meant by a proof in algebra and acquaint himself with the proofs of the most fundamental facts, and, on the other, become familiar with many important results of algebra which are new to him. Excerpt from Lessons Introductory to the Modern Higher Algebra It may be said to date from a paper published by Professor Boole in the Cambridge Mathematical J our nal for November, 1841, which was mainly occupied with applications of the following theorem: Let an or dinary algebraic equation be made homogeneous by writing a: y for 12; let these variables then be linearly transformed by writing M: pg, Xx My for x and y and let V 0 be the condition that the transformed equation shall have equal roots; then the function V will be equal to the similar function for the original equa tion multiplied by a function of A, p, N, pf, and not in volving the coefficients of the original equation. The truth of this principle is manifest from the fact that if the original equation have a square factor, the trans formed must have one likewise; that, therefore, one of the functions in question must vanish whenever the other does, and, consequently, the one must contain the other as a factor; and since each of the coefficients of the transformed only contains in the first degree the coefficients of the original, the two functions, being of the same degree in those coefficients, can only differ by a quantity independent of them. Similar reasoning ap plies to functions of any number of variables. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Excerpt from Higher Algebra The methods given of obtaining at once the square root and the cube root of polynomials, without writing any intermediate steps, will be found not only a great relief from the tedious processes given in our books, but an exhilarating exercise in which students will take great interest. The subject of Maxima and Minima of Functions is presented in a fuller and more systematic way than heretofore, and the application made to practical problems cannot fail to interest the student. Excerpt from A First Course in Higher Algebra This book is an outgrowth of the conviction of the authors that Higher Algebra, to be worthy of the name, must employ advanced methods, and that the method which chiefly marks advanced work in analysis is that of limits. In all but a few chapters the work is based upon limits, the proofs being made as rigorous as seems advisable for immature students, with occasional com ment on points where the proof is not rigorous, or where theorems not yet proved are employed. It is our hope that there is nothing to be unlearned in later work. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Excerpt from A Higher Algebra Preparatory Schools and Academies, if their pupils have had a thorough drill in Arithmetic before they begin the study of Algebra, will find this book specially suited to their needs. The brighter boys of the class can read the advanced chapters while the duller boys review the elementary chapters. Colleges and Scientific Schools, if their pupils, owing to lack of previous drill, have to review carefully the preparatory work of the schools before entering upon the college work proper, will find in this a convenient and sufficiently full book for their requirements. The book being thus intended, not as a compendium, but really, as its title states, only as an introduction to higher algebra, the attempt has been made throughout to lay a sufficiently broad foundation to enable the reader to pursue his further studies intelligently, rather than to carry any single topic to logical completeness. No apology seems necessary for the omission of even such important subjects as Galois's Theory and a systematic treatment of invariants. A selection being necessary, those subjects have been chosen for treatment which have proved themselves of greatest importance in geometry and analysis, as well as in algebra, and the relations of algebraic theories to geometry have been emphasized throughout. At the same time it must be borne in mind that the subject primarily treated is algebra, not analytic geometry, so that such geometric information as is given is necessarily of a fragmentary and somewhat accidental character. Excerpt from Solutions of the Examples in Higher Algebra This work forms a Key or Companion to the Higher Algebra. And contains full solutions of nearly all the Examples. In many cases more than one solution is given, while through out the book frequent reference is made to the text and illustrative Examples in the Algebra. The work has been undertaken at the request of many teachers who have introduced the Algebra into their classes, and for such readers it is mainly intended; but it is hoped that, if ju diciously used, the solutions may also be found serviceable by that large and increasing class of students who read Mathematics without the assistance of a teacher. Excerpt from Higher Algebra: A Sequel to Elementary Algebra for Schools The present work is intended as a sequel to our Elementary Algebra for Schools. The first few chapters are devoted to a fuller discussion of Ratio, Proportion, Variation, and the Progressions, which in the former work were treated in an elementary manner; and we have here introduced theorems and examples which are unsuitable for a first course of reading. From this point the work covers ground for the most part new to the student, and enters upon subjects of special importance: these we have endeavoured to treat minutely and thoroughly, discussing both bookwork and examples with that fulness which we have always found necessary in our experience as teachers. It has been our aim to discuss all the essential parts as completely as possible within the limits of a single volume, but in a few Of the later chapters it has been im possible to find room for more than an introductory sketch in all such cases our Object has been to map out a suitable first course of reading, referring the student to special treatises for fuller information.
