Spain, a country located on the Iberian Peninsula in southwestern Europe, is known for its vibrant culture, rich history, and iconic landmarks. Its capital, Madrid, is known for its high-end fashion, art museums, and delectable cuisine. Spain is home to 47 million people, who speak Spanish, Catalan, Galician, and Basque. Spain has a long and complex history, with influences from various cultures over the centuries. The country was ruled by the Moors (Muslims from North Africa) for nearly 800 years, which is evident in the architecture of cities such as Granada and Seville. Later, Spain became a world power through its colonization and the discovery of the New World, which brought vast wealth to the country. Today, Spain is known for its famous landmarks such as the Sagrada Familia, Park Guell in Barcelona, the Alhambra in Granada, and the Prado Museum in Madrid. Its passionate people, warm climate, and stunning landscapes make Spain a top destination for tourists from around the world.

This ambitious book by Américo Castro is not simply a history of the Spanish people or culture. It is an attempt to create an entirely new understanding of Spanish society. The Spaniards examines how the social position, religious affiliation, and beliefs of Christians, Moors, and Jews, together with their feelings of superiority or inferiority, determined the development of Spanish identity and culture. Castro follows how españoles began to form a nation beginning in the thirteenth century and became wholly Spanish in the sixteenth century in a different way and under different circumstances than other peoples of Western Europe. The original material of this book (chapters II through XII) was translated by Willard F. King, and the newly added material (preface, chapters I, XIII, and XIV, and appendix) was translated by Selma Margaretten. This title is part of UC Press's Voices Revived program, which commemorates University of California Press’s mission to seek out and cultivate the brightest minds and give them voice, reach, and impact. Drawing on a backlist dating to 1893, Voices Revived makes high-quality, peer-reviewed scholarship accessible once again using print-on-demand technology. This title was originally published in 1971.

Spanish Literature A Very Short Introduction written by Jo Labanyi and has been published by OUP Oxford this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2010-08-26 with Literary Criticism categories.

Spanish literature has given the world the figures of Don Quixote and Don Juan, and is responsible for the 'invention' of the novel in the 16th century. The medieval period produced literature in Castilian, Catalan, Galician, Latin, Arabic, and Hebrew, and today there is a flourishing literature in Catalan, Galician, and Basque as well as in Castilian-the language that has became known as 'Spanish'. A multilayered history of exile has produced a transnational literary production, while writers in Spain have engaged with European cultural trends. This Very Short Introduction explores this rich literary history, which resonates with contemporary debates on transnationalism and cultural diversity. The book introduces a general readership to the ways in which Spanish literature has been read, in and outside Spain, explaining misconceptions, outlining the insights of recent scholarship and suggesting new readings. It highlights the precocious modernity of much early modern Spanish literature, and shows how the gap between modern ideas and social reality stimulated creative literary responses in subsequent periods; as well as how contemporary writers have adjusted to Spain's recent accelerated modernization. ABOUT THE SERIES: The Very Short Introductions series from Oxford University Press contains hundreds of titles in almost every subject area. These pocket-sized books are the perfect way to get ahead in a new subject quickly. Our expert authors combine facts, analysis, perspective, new ideas, and enthusiasm to make interesting and challenging topics highly readable.
