Building structures to house the logistical and manufacturing processes of industry is one of the largest and most widespread architectural assignments. Excerpt from The Design of Factory and Industrial Buildings: With Chapters on Welfare Work and Industrial Research Departments During the past four years the erection of factory buildings has been the chief source of work for the building trade of this country, and it might be assumed that the supply of industrial buildings will be equal to, if not greater than, any demand that is likely to be made in the immediate future. This may be true of works connected with the engineering and allied trades, but it should be remembered that many trades having little direct connection with munition work have been almost idle during the "War period," and with the return of normal conditions and the opening of new markets an expansion of their output is certain. The advantages that have accrued to firms possessing works planned for the purposes for which they are used has caused many employers to realize the urgent need of a reconstruction of their own premises, and if a new era of prosperity is to be the aftermath of the War, the reconstruction of existing premises, or the erection of entirely new works, will in many cases be a necessity for the progressive firm or corporation. The absence of a short book dealing with modern factory design has been for long remarked upon by architects, manufacturers, and many persons connected with industrial buildings, and whilst most classes of structures can boast several volumes devoted to their construction and development, the factory, which is the cradle of industrial supremacy, has been almost neglected.
