Studying formal logic can be intimidating without the right help, but knowing how to think logically isn't just for "experts." Logic should be your secret weapon. It's the tool for learning how to use other tools. It's the bones that give a clenched fist its structure (and knuckles). With that in mind, we have painstakingly designed Introductory Logic for everyday students, teachers, and parents who've never tackled syllogisms or fallacies before, but who know just how important learning logic is. In Introductory Logic, you'll get the benefit of James B. Nance's twenty years of teaching experience as you learn the fundamentals you need to think well wherever you are, including: How to properly define terms for maximum precision and accuracy -- and thus win the debate, How to form and interpret statements, the building blocks of logical thought, How to compose valid syllogisms, and -- just as importantly -- expose the invalid fakes using counterexamples, How to analyze arguments in norm

For more than six decades, and for thousands of students, Introduction to Logic has been the gold standard in introductory logic texts. In this fifteenth edition, Carl Cohen and Victor Rodych update Irving M. Copi’s classic text, improving on its many strengths and introducing new and helpful material that will greatly assist both students and instructors. In particular, chapters 1, 8, and 9 have been greatly enhanced without disturbing the book’s clear and gradual pedagogical approach. Specifically: Chapter 1 now uses a simpler and better definition of "deductive validity," which enhances the rest of the book (especially chapters 1 and 8-10, and their new components). Chapter 8 now has: Simpler definitions of "simple statement" and "compound statement" More and more detailed examples of the Complete Truth-Table Method. Chapter 9 now has: A detailed, step-by-step account of the Shorter Truth-Table Method (with detailed step-by-step examples for conclusions of different types) A more complete and detailed account of Indirect Proof A detailed justification for Indirect Proof treating each of the three distinct ways in which an argument can be valid A new section on Conditional Proof, which complements the 19 Rules of Inference and Indirect Proof Explications of proofs of tautologies using both Indirect Proof and Conditional Proof A new section at the end of the chapter explaining the important difference between sound and demonstrative arguments. The Appendices now include: A new appendix on making the Shorter Truth-Table Technique (STTT) more efficient by selecting the most efficient sequence of STTT steps A new appendix on Step 1 calculations for multiple-line shorter truth tables A new appendix on unforced truth-value assignments, invalid arguments, and Maxims III-V. In addition, a Companion Website offers for Students: A Proof Checker Complete Truth Table Exercises Shorter Truth-Table Exercises A Truth-Table Video Venn Diagram Testing of Syllogisms Hundreds of True/False and Multiple Choice Questions for Instructors: An Instructor’s Manual A Solutions Manual www.routledge.com/cw/9781138500860

Excerpt from An Introductory Logic This volume is intended primarily as a text-book for college students, and grew out of my lectures on Logic to undergraduate classes in Cornell University. It aims at being both practical and theoretical. In spite of the obvious deficiencies of formal Logic as a theory of the nature of thought, I am convinced that it is one of the most valuable instruments in modern education for promoting clear thinking, and for developing critical habits of mind. J. S. Mill, speaking in the Autobiography of the discipline which he received from working logical exercises, expresses the following opinion: "I am persuaded that nothing, in modern education, tends so much, when properly used, to form exact thinkers, who attach a precise meaning to words and propositions, and are not imposed on by vague, loose, or ambiguous terms." Although in treating the syllogistic Logic I have followed to a large extent the ordinary mode of presentation, I have both here, and when dealing with the Inductive Methods, endeavoured to interpret the traditional doctrines in a philosophical way, and to prepare for the theoretical discussions of the third part of the book. The advisability of attempting to include a theory of thought, or philosophy of knowledge, even in outline, in an elementary course in Logic, may at first sight appear doubtful. It seems to me, however, that this inclusion is not only justifiable, but even necessary at the present time. INTRODUCTION TO LOGIC is a combined text and workbook for students beginning their study of logic. The workbook style allows students to proceed at their own pace, checking their progress in the end-of-chapter exercises. The text covers propositional logic and predicate logic with identity, the focus being on arguments. The methods of proof are truth-tables and truth-trees (semantic tableaux) in the style of Jeffrey. This text is suitable for students of philosophy, computer science, mathematics and science in general.
