Bernard Mandeville, medico, filosofo, saggista, giornalista, deve la sua fama soprattutto a La Favola delle Api, ovvero vizi privati e pubblici benefici (1714, 1723). Nella tradizione filosofica, il suo nome è legato al tema delle passioni come debolezze da cui ricavare un tornaconto, al tema dell’interesse, a quello dell’utilità sociale dello sfruttamento dei vizi. L’esecrato ‘Man-devil’, un uomo «malauguratamente celebre per i suoi scritti perniciosi», è servito spesso a rappresentare per antonomasia la figura del libertino cinico. La scarsità di informazioni biografiche, la totale mancanza di qualunque ritratto, immagine od oggetto personale, hanno lasciato mano libera a interpreti e detrattori di plasmare di volta in volta la figura che meglio si attagliava ai loro scopi polemici. Le ricerche degli ultimi decenni hanno restituito dignità al suo pensiero di scienziato della natura umana e di osservatore disincantato della società. Per Mandeville, l’uomo è un animale egoista, dominato dalle passioni, prime fra tutte l’amore di sé e la vanità. È a queste passioni che l’uomo deve, però, lo sviluppo delle proprie capacità e delle proprie istituzioni perché la sua sensibilità all’approvazione è tale da spingerlo a ricercare comportamenti socialmente apprezzabili.

The Individual without Passions: Modern Individualism and the Loss of the Social Bond offers an innovative look at an extremely timely and important issue—individualism—from the point of view of a theory of passions. This book underlines the importance of the problem of the passions in both forming individual identity and building the social bond. Drawing inspiration from classic authors that represent fundamental milestones along the route of modern individualism—from Montaigne to Hobbes, from Locke to Smith, from Rousseau to Tocqueville—The Individual without Passions puts forward new hypotheses that contrast with the consolidated views of contemporary reflection, both modern and postmodern. Elena Pulcini argues that passions are crucial not only when they are strong (homo oeconomicus), but also when absent or weak (homo democraticus), in both cases producing pathological effects on the Self and the social bond. Finally, this book underlines that the image of the modern individual does not end with the egoistical passions and that it is possible to reactivate empathetic and solidaristic passions; furthermore, it proposes the hypothesis that the solidaristic passions go to fight the egoistical passions. This hypothesis seems confirmed and is most evident in the phenomenon of the gift (as interpreted by Marcel Mauss and his contemporary heirs), the “hidden” testimony of a desire for belonging which enables us to propose a new figure of the individual—homo reciprocus.

Lettera a Dione (1732) è l’ultima opera scritta da Mandeville, pochi mesi prima di morire, in risposta alle accuse che il vescovo irlandese George Berkeley gli aveva mosso nel suo Alcifrone. È la prima volta che il medico olandese risponde direttamente a un suo detrattore. Lo fa per sciogliere i paradossi, le ambiguità e le incomprensioni che inizialmente avevano contribuito allo straordinario successo della Favola delle api, ma che poi avevano portato alla condanna dell’opera da parte del Grand Jury del Middlesex. In quest’opera Mandeville abbandona il suo stile di scrittura ambiguo e paradossale e ci offre la chiave di lettura di tutto il suo pensiero.
