Il testo indaga gli aspetti storico-istituzionali e archivistici dell'archivio comunale di Firenze - negli anni in cui essa fu capitale del Regno d'Italia e introduce l'ipotesi della presenza, anche in Italia, di un principio conservativo che per la teoria archivistica sarebbe strettamente anglosassone, ossia quello dell'unbroken custody - o "archiviazione ininterrotta". L'analisi conduce alla consapevolezza della presenza di una deriva metodologica e di un inaccurato sbilanciamento verso il dato, piuttosto che verso la preservazione delle relazioni giuridico-documentali originarie dei complessi antichi, che offuscano le tracce delle norme istitutive che sancivano le caratteristiche di un sistema di unbroken custody e allo stesso tempo frammentano le relazioni interne all'archivio, portando, in particolare, a una svalutazione dei mezzi di corredo che ne sorreggevano le funzionalità strutturali e rappresentative.
