For more than 80 years, the oil and gas industry has used seismic methods to construct images and determine physical characteristics of rocks that can yield information about oil and gas bearing structures in the earth. This book presents the different seismic data processing methods, also known as seismic "migration," in a unified mathematical way. The book serves as a bridge between the applied math and geophysics communities by presenting geophysicists with a practical introduction to advanced engineering mathematics, while presenting mathematicians with a window into the world of the mathematically sophisticated geophysicist.

Mobius Inversion In Physics written by Nanxian Chen and has been published by World Scientific this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2010 with Mathematics categories.

This book attempts to bridge the gap between the principles of pure mathematics and the applications in physical science. After the Mobius inversion formula had been considered as purely academic, or beyond what was useful in the physics community for more than 150 years, the apparently obscure result in classical mathematics suddenly appears to be connected to a variety of important inverse problems in physical science. This book only requires readers to have some background in elementary calculus and general physics, and prerequisite knowledge of number theory is not needed. It will be attractive to our multidisciplinary readers interested in the Mobius technique, which is a tiny but important part of the number-theoretic methods. It will inspire many students and researchers in both physics and mathematics. In a practical problem, continuity and discreteness are often correlated, and few textbook have given attention to this wide and important field as this book. Clearly, this book will be an essential supplement for many existing courses such as mathematical physics, elementary number theory and discrete mathematics.

This book provides an up-to-date presentation of a broad range of contemporary problems in inverse scattering involving acoustic, elastic and electromagnetic waves. Descriptions will be given of traditional (but still in use and subject to on-going improvements) and more recent methods for identifying either: a) the homogenized material parameters of (spatially) unbounded or bounded heterogeneous media, or b) the detailed composition (spatial distribution of the material parameters) of unbounded or bounded heterogeneous media, or c) the location, shape, orientation and material characteristics of an object embedded in a wellcharacterized homogeneous, homogenized or heterogeneous unbounded or bounded medium, by inversion of reflected, transmitted or scattered spatiotemporal recorded waveforms resulting from the propagation of probe radiation within the medium.

Masked Inversion In French written by Paul M. Postal and has been published by University of Chicago Press this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 1989-02-28 with Foreign Language Study categories.

In this important work of linguistic analysis, Paul M. Postal addresses a paradigm anomaly in French that has hitherto resisted explanation. A general restriction limiting the form of direct objects in complex infinitival constructions with main verbs like faire fails to hold with certain subordinate verbs, especially connaître. Marshaling extensive evidence, Postal argues that this apparent irregularity is a symptom of a deeper regularity. Rather than being an ordinary transitive complement, the subordinate clause in these cases is actually an Inversion structure, one in which the logical subject demotes to indirect object. However, since this demotion induces no word order change or other direct morphological consequences, the inversion is "masked," and revealed only by several types of apparent anomalies. This analysis has significant consequences for contemporary syntactic theories. First, the arguments support the view that a sentence's superficial structure cannot be identified with its syntactic structure, even though such an identification is a fundamental assumption of several currently influential grammatical frameworks. Second, even certain theories that do posit abstract aspects of grammatical form fail to allow for the needed Inversion structures. Postal's study supports theories based on the notion of arc and stratification into levels which provide a natural treatment consistent with the factual requirements. Masked Inversion in French is the first systematic account of this puzzling French syntactic anomaly, and its findings will stimulate research in many areas of natural language grammatical structure.

With the proliferation of computer languages and dialects, it is important to create tools to aid in the construction of source-to-source translators. By allowing users to make use of software (or data) written for another system, these tools form an important component in the quest for software reusability. After discussing the theoretical and practical issues of attribute grammar inversion, this book demonstrates how the technique can be used to build source-to-source translators. This is done by first identifying a common canonical form in which to represent the various source languages and then writing attribute grammars from each source to the canonical form. By automatically inverting these attribute grammars one obtains translators from the canonical form back to each source language and by composing the appropriate pairs of translators one obtains source-to-source translators. To prove the feasibility of the inversion approach to source-to-source translation, it has been used to generate translators between the programming languages Pascal and C.

Iterative Methods without Inversion presents the iterative methods for solving operator equations f(x) = 0 in Banach and/or Hilbert spaces. It covers methods that do not require inversions of f (or solving linearized subproblems). The typical representatives of the class of methods discussed are Ulm’s and Broyden’s methods. Convergence analyses of the methods considered are based on Kantorovich’s majorization principle which avoids unnecessary simplifying assumptions like differentiability of the operator or solvability of the equation. These analyses are carried out under a more general assumption about degree of continuity of the operator than traditional Lipschitz continuity: regular continuity. Key Features The methods discussed are analyzed under the assumption of regular continuity of divided difference operator, which is more general and more flexible than the traditional Lipschitz continuity. An attention is given to criterions for comparison of merits of various methods and to the related concept of optimality of a method of certain class. Many publications on methods for solving nonlinear operator equations discuss methods that involve inversion of linearization of the operator, which task is highly problematic in infinite dimensions. Accessible for anyone with minimal exposure to nonlinear functional analysis.

Seismic Inversion written by Gerard T. Schuster and has been published by SEG Books this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2017-07-01 with Science categories.

This book describes the theory and practice of inverting seismic data for the subsurface rock properties of the earth. The primary application is for inverting reflection and/or transmission data from engineering or exploration surveys, but the methods described also can be used for earthquake studies. Seismic Inversion will be of benefit to scientists and advanced students in engineering, earth sciences, and physics. It is desirable that the reader has some familiarity with certain aspects of numerical computation, such as finite-difference solutions to partial differential equations, numerical linear algebra, and the basic physics of wave propagation. For those not familiar with the terminology and methods of seismic exploration, a brief introduction is provided. To truly understand the nuances of seismic inversion, we have to actively practice what we preach (or teach). Therefore, computational labs are provided for most of the chapters, and some field data labs are given as well.

This book describes a novel physics-based approach to inverse modeling that makes use of the properties of the equations governing the physics of the processes under consideration. It focuses on the inverse problems occurring in hydrogeology, but the approach is also applicable to similar inverse problems in various other fields, such as petroleum-reservoir engineering, geophysical and medical imaging, weather forecasting, and flood prediction. This approach takes into consideration the physics – for instance, the boundary conditions required to obtain a well-posed mathematical problem – to help avoid errors in model building and therefore enhance the reliability of the results. In addition, this method requires less computation time and less computer memory. The theory is presented in a comprehensive, not overly mathematical, way, with three practice-oriented hydrogeological case studies and a comparison with the conventional approach illustrating the power of the method. Forward and Inverse Modeling of Groundwater Flow is of use to researchers and graduate students in the fields of hydrology, as well as to professional hydrologists within industry. It also appeals to geophysicists and those working in or studying petroleum reservoir modeling and basin modeling.
