La modelación, modelización o modelaje está a la orden del día en Matemática Educativa o Educación Matemática. Se desarrollan una gran cantidad de investigaciones en Latinoamérica al respecto. Las perspectivas teóricas con las que se abordan son diversas. En este libro la modelación y los modelos se estudian como parte de los procesos de aprendizaje de la matemática y de la matemática escolar, en diferentes contextos y con diferentes usuarios de la matemática: estudiantes de primaria, secundaria y universidad, con profesores, futuros profesores y estudiantes de ingeniería. Se reúnen trabajos en modelación relevantes en Matemática Educativa, de investigadores de cuatro países, Brasil, Colombia, Chile y México. Los aportes filosóficos del libro son diversos y profundos. Algunos artículos parten de una filosofía representacional en donde los modelos representan realidades u objetos matemáticos. Otros son críticos de estas filosofías y exploran posturas epistemológicas alternas como la postura socioepistemológica, que afirma que conocer es una relación con el actuar en reciprocidad amplia con el entorno. El libro pretende ser un instrumento para el desarrollo de futuras investigaciones, al mostrar parte de lo que se ha hecho en modelación y sus soportes teóricos, en Latinoamérica.

In this volume cultural, social and cognitive influences on the research and teaching of mathematical modelling are explored from a variety of theoretical and practical perspectives. The authors of the current volume are all members of the International Community of Teachers of Mathematical Modelling and Applications, the peak research body in this field. A distinctive feature of this volume is the high number of authors from South American countries. In Nineteen Eighty-Four George Orwell gives a description of different forms of suppression. We learn about the telescreens placed everywhere, through which it is possible for Big-Brother to watch the inhabitants of Oceania. However, it is not only important to control the activities of the inhabitants, it is important as well to control their thoughts, and the Thought Police are on guard. This is a very direct form of monitoring and control, but Orwell also outlines a more imperceptible and calculated line of thought control. In the Appendix to Nineteen Eighty-Four Orwell explains some struc tures of 'Newspeak', which is going to become the official language of Oceania. Newspeak is being developed by the Ministry of Truth, and this language has to substitute 'Oldspeak' (similar to standard English). Newspeak should fit with the official politics of Oceania ruled by the Ingsoc party: "The purpose of Newspeak was not only to provide a medium of expression for the world-view and mental habits proper to the devotees of Ingsoc, but to make all other modes of thought impos sible. It was intended that when Newspeak had been adopted once and for all and Oldspeak forgotten, a heretical thought - that is, a thought diverging from the principles of Ingsoc - should be literally unthink able, at least as far as thought is dependent on words.

This volume documents on-going research and theorising in the sub-field of mathematics education devoted to the teaching and learning of mathematical modelling and applications. Mathematical modelling provides a way of conceiving and resolving problems in the life world of people whether these range from the everyday individual numeracy level to sophisticated new problems for society at large. Mathematical modelling and real world applications are considered as having potential for multi-disciplinary work that involves knowledge from a variety of communities of practice such as those in different workplaces (e.g., those of educators, designers, construction engineers, museum curators) and in different fields of academic endeavour (e.g., history, archaeology, mathematics, economics). From an educational perspective, researching the development of competency in real world modelling involves research situated in crossing the boundaries between being a student engaged in modelling or mathematical application to real word tasks in the classroom, being a teacher of mathematical modelling (in or outside the classroom or bridging both), and being a modeller of the world outside the classroom. This is the focus of many of the authors of the chapters in this book. All authors of this volume are members of the International Community of Teachers of Mathematical Modelling (ICTMA), the peak research body into researching the teaching and learning of mathematical modelling at all levels of education from the early years to tertiary education as well as in the workplace.
