Transgender individuals have a gender identity that is incongruent with the gender they were assigned at birth. Researchers have acknowledged the differences between cisgender and transgender individuals in their gender identities and life experiences, including their experiences of sexual violence. However, researchers have not described the impact sexual violence has on gender identity in transgender individuals. The proposed study will investigate the impact of sexual violence characteristics on gender identity congruence and acceptance in transgender individuals. Using descriptive statistics and linear regression models, this study will examine the impact of sexual violence characteristics on trauma centrality, and the impact of sexual violence characteristics and trauma centrality on gender identity acceptance and congruence. Results of the descriptive statistics and linear regression models will be discussed in relation to relevant social identity theories.

This book provides practical advice for professionals working with transgender (including non-binary) people who have survived any form of sexual violence or abuse. It gives professionals an understanding of the impact and trauma of sexual violence on trans people, as well as the additional difficulties they face accessing services that have traditionally been designed to serve cisgendered clients. The authors reveal specific issues faced by trans people as they recover from traumatic sexual experiences, and what steps professionals and organisations can take to meet the needs of the trans community. They also take a critical look at what can be done to reduce discrimination, particularly as many services for sexual violence tend to enforce strict gender segregation which can be exclusionary for trans clients. This book helps mitigate the traumatic effects of sexual violence on trans individuals, by recommending effective responses for all levels of service delivery, from organisational policies to advice for front-line professionals.

Gender-based sexual violence is a widespread public health problem affecting people of all ages and from diverse backgrounds. Although both women and men experience sexual trauma across countries and contexts (e.g., military vs. civilian), prevalence rates of sexual trauma are higher among women, and women and girls may often be targeted due to their sex and rigidly held beliefs about gender roles. Experiences of sexual violence can have a myriad of negative outcomes for survivors, including implications for mental health and physical health difficulties. The content of this book encompasses a foundation for understanding the impact of gender-based sexual violence, common mental and physical health difficulties associated sexual assault, and trauma-informed care. This volume also addresses evidence-based psychotherapies for trauma survivors as well as emotional difficulties that may affect providers who work with this population (e.g., burnout, secondary traumatic stress). After reading this book, the authors hope readers have a deeper understanding of gender-based sexual violence and can meaningfully apply the practical skills provided throughout this text, whether in support of loved ones or in their daily work. Finally, the authors hope all readers experience decreased stigma, including self-stigma, related to gender-based violence.

Transgender people may experience a variety of different types of violence throughout their lives due to their gender identity. This study sought to understand the violent experiences that this population faces and the supports and resources they may access in order to deal with those experiences. In this study, five transgender individuals were interviewed regarding their experiences of violence and the resources that may or may not have been available and utilized. These interviews were then analysed using a constant comparative method. Of these five participants, two were Female-to-Male and three were Male-to-Female. All of the participants discussed the violence that they had faced. This included verbal violence from strangers, as well as physical and sexual violence. In addition to violence within relationships and random violence from strangers, participants also identified ways in which systems could be violent. These experiences also had an impact on the participants, ranging from PTSD to suicide attempts. Potential resources and supports were also examined, focusing on mental health and law enforcement. Perceptions of these supports tended to be more negative, especially among law enforcement. Instead, participants identified that they had reached out to more informal sources, such as friends, family, LGBT groups, and the Internet. With regards to the violence that the participants faced, it was largely perceived to be due to the societal reaction to them, specifically relating to transphobia and homophobia. Implications for research, practice, and limitations of the study are also discussed.

Trans Individuals Lived Experiences Of Harm written by Katie McBride and has been published by Springer Nature this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2023-06-14 with Social Science categories.

This book explores how neoliberal consumer capitalist ideals of meritocracy, competitive individualism, and responsibilisation have shaped trans people’s subjectivity and lived experiences of harm. The book critiques the adequacy of legal constructs of hate crime to acknowledge the social harms experienced. The deep ethnographic data illuminates a variety of social harms that result from the failure of social structures and systems to acknowledge gender identities beyond the binary. The book offers a historically grounded theorisation of anti-trans sentiment to produce a persuasive argument for understanding the harms of hate as recognitive harms. In this sense, the book opens up a path to theorizing the empirically documented emotional and psychological harms of both transphobia and transnormative ideals, as rooted in a binary gender order that has been invigorated by the hyper individualism and competitiveness of capitalist neoliberalism.

In the field of victimology, the landscape of victimization is constantly evolving, presenting new challenges and demands. The traditional approaches to understanding and addressing victimization are often inadequate in capturing the complex and nuanced experiences of victims. Furthermore, the justice system and victim support services struggle to keep pace with the changing forms of victimization, leading to gaps in protection and support for victims. There is a critical need for a contemporary approach that comprehensively examines victimization and provides practical insights and solutions for researchers, practitioners, and policymakers. Investigating and Combating Gender-Related Victimization offers a pioneering solution to the challenges posed by modern victimization. By focusing exclusively on qualitative studies, this handbook provides a deep and nuanced understanding of victim experiences, interactions with the justice system, and the impact of victimization. The qualitative approach allows for a more holistic examination of victimization, capturing the emotions, narratives, and coping mechanisms of victims often overlooked in quantitative studies.

"In American society, the mainstream formula story for intimate partner violence depicts a scenario where an aggressive male perpetrator enacts physical violence against a helpless female victim. This formula story is heteronormative and relies and cis-gender actors who adhere to gender roles, leaving transgender and non-binary survivors without a narrative to legitimate their experience. Little research on intimate partner violence examines abuse in the lives of transgender and non-binary individuals, though the limited existing research indicates that transgender individuals seldom disclose their experiences to others. Through semi-structured interviews with nine transgender and/or non-binary survivors of IPV, this study examined the barriers and aids that transgender and non-binary survivors face when deciding whether to disclose their abuse. Participants indicated transphobia, minimization of abuse, and threats to outness as barriers that prevented disclosure. Participants also indicated interpersonal and structural support, a sense of urgency, and a desire to help others as aids to overcome these barriers. While such barriers and aids took various forms and meaning based upon the survivors race, sexuality, and ability status, more research is needed that explores the effects of intersecting identities."--Abstract from author supplied metadata.
