A broad theory of research methodology for psychology and the behavioral sciences that offers a coherent treatment of a range of behavioral research methods. This book considers scientific method in the behavioral sciences, with particular reference to psychology. Psychologists learn about research methods and use them to conduct their research, but their training teaches them little about the nature of scientific method itself. In Investigating the Psychological World, Brian Haig fills this gap. Drawing on behavioral science methodology, the philosophy of science, and statistical theory, Haig constructs a broad theory of scientific method that has particular relevance for the behavioral sciences. He terms this account of method the abductive theory of method (ATOM) in recognition of the importance it assigns to explanatory reasoning. ATOM offers the framework for a coherent treatment of a range of quantitative and qualitative behavioral research methods, giving equal treatment to data-analytic methods and methods of theory construction. Haig draws on the new experimentalism in the philosophy of science to reconstruct the process of phenomena detection as it applies to psychology; he considers the logic and purpose of exploratory factor analysis; he discusses analogical modeling as a means of theory development; and he recommends the use of inference to the best explanation for evaluating theories in psychology. Finally, he outlines the nature of research problems, discusses the nature of the abductive method, and describes applications of the method to grounded theory method and clinical reasoning. The book will be of interest not only to philosophers of science but also to psychological researchers who want to deepen their conceptual understanding of research methods and methodological concerns.

Realist Inquiry In Social Science written by Brian D. Haig and has been published by SAGE this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2015-11-09 with Social Science categories.

Realist Inquiry in Social Science is an invaluable guide to conducting realist research. Written by highly regarded experts in the field, the first part of the book sets out the fundamentals necessary for rigorous realist research, while the second part deals with a number of its most important applications, discussing it in the context of case studies, action research and grounded theory amongst other approaches. Grounded in philosophical methodology, this book goes beyond understanding knowledge justification only as empirical validity, but instead emphasises the importance of theoretical criteria for all good research. The authors consider both quantitative and qualitative research methods, and approach methodology from an interdisciplinary viewpoint. Using abductive reasoning as the starting point for an insightful journey into realist inquiry, this book demonstrates that scientific realism continues to be of major relevance to the social sciences.

Research Methods in Psychology: Investigating Human Behavior draws on fascinating stories to illustrate the entire research process within a unifying conceptual framework. Bestselling authors Paul G. Nestor and Russell K. Schutt present a clear and comprehensive introduction to the logic and techniques of research methods in psychology by employing a unique combination of two distinct yet complementary pedagogical techniques. First, chapters designed for experiential, hands-on studies put the student in the roles of researcher, participant, and consumer to bring concepts to life. Second, the findings of cognitive science guide the text in a way that is most conducive to learning. This novel approach serves as an effective way to make the world of psychological research fun and rewarding for students, in addition to allowing them to gain the foundational knowledge they need to design, conduct, and present research.

Excerpt from The Soul of Man: An Investigation of the Facts of Physiological and Experimental Psychology We all know the legend of the Sphinx, who on the mountain path stops the wanderer on his way and proposes her riddle. And the riddle which she proposes to you and to me and to all mortal beings, is the same old world-problem, What is man ? Whence does he come and whither does he go? What is more interesting to man than his own soul! And what, at the same time, is so mysterious, so wonderful, so marvellous ! Our pleasures and pains, our loves and hatreds, our hopes and fears, our longings, our aspirations and ideals, what is their meaning and whither do they tend ? For us the centre of the universe lies in our own mind. Here, if anywhere, must be sought the key to the mysteries of the cosmos. And the problem of the human soul is of most vital importance ; for every practical work, every success in human life, is a part of its solution. All progress, all evolution, all growth means a development, an expanse, and an elevation of the human mind. We cannot think of any improvement of economical, political, social, scientific, or religious conditions that is not at the same time an advance in the psychical life of man. The psychological problem is the centre of philosophy. No philosophy can evade it; and vice versa, every presentation of the psychological problem must contain at least in nute a philosophy. We cannot have a conception of the soul which is not, or does not at least suggest, at the same time, a conception of the world. The world-problem means to man the problem of the human soul.
