The Lapita pottery displaying dentate stamped decorations is at the core of our actual understanding of the human colonisation of Oceania about 3000 years ago. One of the ways to extract information about these past societies is by characterising the ceramic collections and examining the chemical compositions of the various vessels. This project examines the compositional similarities and dissimilarities of early pottery assemblages in Vanuatu. Connecting the technological styles with contextual cultural information, such as decorations or vessel forms, lead to a better understanding of the technological choices faced during pottery production. These decisions are taken following the culturally accepted rules embodied in the production process and consequently, this study allows a better understanding of significant parts of the socio-political and economic aspects of Lapita and post-Lapita societies. Results show that the vast majority of the Lapita and post-Lapita ceramic vessels analysed were produced locally. The homogeneity of the dentate-stamped decorations across Lapita sites reveals that ideas were transferred more than objects and that the ideological signification of these vessels was more important than their economic value. It is also evident from the results that the compositional variability observed in earlier Lapita ceramic collection is much more significant than what is observed from the more recent assemblages. This variability of technological styles for Lapita pots is generally seen as a consequence resulting from mobile settlement patterns. However, the important natural variability of the raw materials used to produce pottery demonstrates that this mobility is generally restricted to a relatively small-scale since not much movement or geographical distance would be required to produce compositional profiles corresponding to the results. From a political economy perspective, the significant variability of Lapita technological styles demonstrates that there wasn't any apparent control or imposed limitations over access to the raw materials used to produce pottery and that there was no specialised production. It also suggests that a technological exploratory phase probably followed the arrival of Lapita potters on previously unoccupied islands with unfamiliar raw materials. The important decrease in varieties of technological styles between Lapita and immediately post-Lapita assemblages combined with the almost exclusive usage of local materials by post-Lapita potters support the idea that a general regionalisation process was occurring at the time when dentate stamped pottery stopped being produced. The almost systematic absence of decoration and the technological homogeneity in immediately post-Lapita ceramic collections are in such contrast with Lapita decorations and the fracture between both so clean that it should be seen as a strategy to differentiate the subsequent cultural production from the former Lapita political, economic and religious structures. Overall, the combined modification of both the decorative and technological style between Lapita and immediately post-Lapita indicates that some major social transformation occurred, as has been already suggested by others. In terms of methodological contribution, this study shows that LA-ICP-MS represents an excellent analytical technique to gather bulk compositional profiles of ceramic assemblages and that it represents a viable alternative to petrography.

‘This volume is the most comprehensive review of Lapita research to date, tackling many of the lingering questions regarding origin and dispersal. Multidisciplinary in nature with a focus on summarising new findings, but also identifying important gaps that can help direct future research.’ — Professor Scott Fitzpatrick, Department of Anthropology, University of Oregon ‘This substantial volume offers a welcome update on the definition of the Lapita culture. It significantly refreshes the knowledge on this foundational archaeological culture of the Pacific Islands in providing new data on sites and assemblages, and new discussions of hypotheses previously proposed.’ — Dr Frédérique Valentin, Centre national de la recherche scientifique (CNRS), Paris This volume comprises 23 chapters that focus on the archaeology of Lapita, a cultural horizon associated with the founding populations who first colonised much of the south west Pacific some 3000 years ago. The Lapita culture has been most clearly defined by its distinctive dentate-stamped decorated pottery and the design system represented on it and on further incised pots. Modern research now encompasses a whole range of aspects associated with Lapita and this is reflected in this volume. The broad overlapping themes of the volume—Lapita distribution and chronology, society and subsistence—relate to research questions that have long been debated in relation to Lapita.

‘The island world of Melanesia—ranging from New Guinea and the Bismarcks through the Solomons, Vanuatu, and New Caledonia—is characterised more than anything by its boundless diversity in geography, language and culture. The deep historical roots of this diversity are only beginning to be uncovered by archaeological investigations, but as the contributions to this volume demonstrate, the exciting discoveries being made across this region are opening windows to our understanding of the historical processes that contributed to such remarkably varied cultures. Archaeologies of Island Melanesia offers a sampling of some of the recent and ongoing research that spans such topics as landscape, exchange systems, culture contact and archaeological practice, authored by some of the leading scholars in Oceanic archaeology.’ — Professor Patrick Vinton Kirch Professor of Anthropology, University of Hawai‘i Island Melanesia is a remarkable region in many respects, from its great ecological and linguistic diversity, to the complex histories of settlement and interaction spanning from the Pleistocene to the present. Archaeological research in Island Melanesia is currently going through a vibrant phase of exciting new discoveries and challenging debates about questions that apply far beyond the region. This volume draws together a variety of current perspectives in regional archaeology for Island Melanesia, focusing on Vanuatu, the Solomon Islands, New Caledonia and Papua New Guinea. It features both high-level theoretical approaches and rigorous data-driven case studies covering recent research in landscape archaeology, exchange and material culture, and cultural practices.

This book is a proceeding from a number of papers presented in The International Symposium on Austronesian Diaspora on 18th to 23rd July 2016 at Nusa Dua, Bali, which was held by The National Research Centre of Archaeology in cooperation with The Directorate of Cultural Heritage and Museums. The symposium is the second event with regard to the Austronesian studies since the first symposium held eleven years ago by the Indonesian Institute of Sciences in cooperation with the International Centre for Prehistoric and Austronesia Study (ICPAS) in Solo on 28th June to 1st July 2005 with a theme of “the Dispersal of the Austronesian and the Ethno-geneses of People in the Indonesia Archipelago’’ that was attended by experts from eleven countries. The studies on Austronesia are very interesting to discuss because Austronesia is a language family, which covers about 1200 languages spoken by populations that inhabit more than half the globe, from Madagascar in the west to Easter Island (Pacific Area) in the east and from Taiwan-Micronesia in the north to New Zealand in the south. Austronesia is a language family, which dispersed before the Western colonization in many places in the world. The Austronesian dispersal in very vast islands area is a huge phenomenon in the history of humankind. Groups of Austronesian-speaking people had emerged in ca. 7000- 6000 BP in Taiwan before they migrated in 5000 BP to many places in the world, bringing with them the Neolithic Culture, characterized by sedentary, agricultural societies with animal domestication. The Austronesian-speaking people are distinguished by Southern Mongoloid Race, which had the ability to adapt to various types of natural environment that enabled them to develop through space and time. The varied geographic environment where they lived, as well as intensive interactions with the outside world, had created cultural diversities. The population of the Austronesian speakers is more than 380 million people and the Indonesian Archipelago is where most of them develop. Indonesia also holds a key position in understanding the Austronesians. For this reason, the Austronesian studies are crucial in the attempt to understand the Indonesian societies in relation to their current cultural roots, history, and ethno-genesis. This book discusses six sessions in the symposium. The first session is the prologue; the second is the keynote paper, which is Austronesia: an overview; the third is Diaspora and Inter-regional Connection; the fourth is Regional highlight; the fifth is Harimau Cave: Research Progress; while the sixth session is the epilogue, which is a synthesis of 37 papers. We hope that this book will inspire more researchers to study Austronesia, a field of never ending research in Indonesia.

I enjoyed reading this volume. It is rare to see such a comprehensive report on hard data published these days, especially one so insightfully contextualised by the editors' introductory and concluding chapters. These scholars and the others involved in the work really know their stuff, and it shows. The editors connect the preoccupations of Pacific archaeologists with those of their colleagues working in other island regions and on "big questions" of colonisation, migration, interaction and patterns and processes of cultural change in hitherto-uninhabited environments. These sorts of outward-looking, big-picture contextual studies are invaluable, but all too often are missing from locally- and regionally-oriented writing, very much to its detriment. In sum, the work strongly advances our understanding of the early prehistory of Fiji through its well-integrated combination of original research and the reinterpretation of existing knowledge in the context of wider theoretical and historical concerns. In doing so The Early Prehistory of Fiji makes a truly substantial contribution to Pacific and archaeological scholarship. Professor Ian Lilley, The University of Queensland

This study presents a detailed Lapita to Post-Lapita sequence/transition with chronology at particular sites in west New Britain, through the medium of pottery analysis of style and production. The data allow me to address the research questions: (1) the cultural change that happened toward the end of Lapita, and (2) the issue of cultural continuity/discontinuity between the Lapita and Post-Lapita periods.
