This report presents the results of the evaluation of two species of insects for the biological control of Eurasian watermilfoil (Myriophyllum spicatum L.). One of the species is a native weevil, Litodactylus leucogaster (Marsh.), which attacks the flower spikes, and the other is an accidentally introduced European moth, Acentria nivea (Oliver), whose larvae feed on the leaves and stems. The biology of L. leucogaster was studied in detail and host-specificity tests were conducted with adults and larvae. Since it was determined to be specific to watermilfoils, it was released at Crystal River, Florida, on 22 August 1979. Two adults were captured at Crystal River in November indicating possible establishment. The pyralid moth, A. nivea, was difficult to rear in the laboratory. Since the females were active only one night, successful matings were rare in the small colony. Larval production was best in containers that were minimally disturbed. the larvae required water temperatures below 22 C for development though they could survive short periods at higher temperatures. The larvae were not specific to milfoil; however, A. nivea may still be of interest as a member of a complex of species which attack milfoil. (Author).

Many of the most important aquatic nuisance plants are immigrants that arrived in the United States without their respective natural enemies. These include, among others, alligatorweed, water hyacinth, water lettuce, water chestnut, hydrilla, and Eurasian watermilfoil. The first two species have been controlled at many sites and reduced throughout much of their range by insects imported from their native homes and released into the environment. This method of control is called classical biological control. The objectives of this study were (a) to identify and visit diverse regions of P.R. China, Japan, and Korea that had hydrilla and Eurasian watermilfoil, (b)to collect herbivorous insects on the target species and on related species, (c) to note the life cycles and types of damage for the insects, (d) to carry living specimens of promising species to the Gainesville, FL, quarantine facility, and (e) to establish colonies of the insects in quarantine for companion biology and host range studies.

Euhrychiopsis lecontei (milfoil weevils) have been used as a native, augmentative biological control agent in the management of the invasive aquatic weed, Myriophyllum spicatum (Eurasian watermilfoil), since the 1990's. Although much research has been conducted on E. lecontei's life history and effectiveness as a biological control agent, detailed genetic characterization of the weevil and its close relatives has been lacking in the literature. The current studies sought to fill this gap in knowledge by collecting molecular genetic data for this important native insect. Characterization of interspecific diversity, via the examination of mitochondrial DNA of E. lecontei and other members of the tribe Phytobiini, suggest that the North American members of this group are sister species (E. lecontei and Parenthis vestitus) as are European members (Eubrychius velutus and Phytobius leucogaster) of the group. This study therefore supports the hypothesis that this group of milfoil specialists shares a recent common ancestor that colonized aquatic habitats and utilized one or more Myriophyllum species as a host. Intraspecific studies utilizing mitochondrial and microsatellite DNA of E. lecontei were also performed. These data indicate that while the species shows some geographic structuring on a continental scale, population-level studies indicate high levels of panmixia with relatively high rates of inbreeding. Since the continued management of Eurasian watermilfoil represents a large economic and ecological burden across the United States and Canada, studies such as these are of particular value in determining if E. lecontei has suitable viability as a native biological control agent for this invasive plant.
