Nuclear fusion of deuterium and Tritium relies on the accomplishment of plasma temperatures in the range of 20keV. In magnetic confinement fusion, the heat transport and radiation losses are compensated by plasma heating. This scheme relies on the control of the loss mechanisms and in particular the plasma radiation. Tungsten (W) is the main candidate for the first wall of a reactor due to its robustness against physical sputtering by the plasma ions, however, when W reaches concentrations of 1E-4 in the plasma, it causes unduly large plasma cooling by radiation. This implies restrictive impurity control for W, which needs reliable diagnostic by plasma spectroscopy. A pre-requisite for interpretation of the W-spectra is the availability of atomic data for W. The most intense spectral lines of highly ionized W are emitted in the VUV and soft X-ray range. To perform calculations on atomic data the code packages incorporated in the ADAS project are used. The electronic structure of nearly all W-ions is calculated by the Cowan-code (Hartree-Fock algorithm). In a second step, the cross sections for electron impact excitation are evaluated via the Cowan-code using the plane wave Born-approximation. A detailed collisional-radiative model is employed to calculate the model-spectra for each ion in equilibrium. Finally, ionization and recombination rates of W are evaluated by semi-empirical formulae, which make use of the electronic structure calculations of the Cowan-code. All atomic data are confronted with experimental measurements from the Garching tokamak ASDEX Upgrade and the Berlin electron-beam ion trap (EBIT). The experimental investigations extend up to 5keV electron temperatures, which is the maximum of the routine operation at ASDEX Upgrade. 'Impurity accumulation', which is characterized by a strong peaking of the impurity density profile, enables unique investigations on the fractional abundance of Ag-like W27+ up to Co-like W47+. According to this findings diff.

A three-year research program for the development of novel XUV spectroscopic diagnostics for magnetically confined fusion plasmas is proposed. The new diagnostic system will use layered synthetic microstructures (LSM) coated, flat and curved surfaces as dispersive elements in spectrometers and narrow band XUV filter arrays. In the framework of the proposed program we will develop impurity monitors for poloidal and toroidal resolved measurements on PBX-M and Alcator C-Mod, imaging XUV spectrometers for electron density and temperature fluctuation measurements in the hot plasma core in TEXT or other similar tokamaks and plasma imaging devices in soft x-ray light for impurity behavior studies during RF heating on Phaedrus T and carbon pellet ablation in Alcator C-Mod. Recent results related to use of multilayer in XUV plasma spectroscopy are presented. We also discuss the latest results reviewed to q{sub o} and local poloidal field measurements using Zeeman polarimetry.

This book of proceedings collects the papers presented at the Workshop on Diagnostics for ITER, held at Villa Monastero, Varenna (Italy), from August 28 to September 1, 1995. The Workshop was organised by the International School of Plasma Physics "Piero Caldirola. " Established in 1971, the ISPP has organised over fifty advanced courses and workshops on topics mainly related to plasma physics. In particular, courses and workshops on plasma diagnostics (previously held in 1975, 1978, 1982, 1986, and 1991) can be considered milestones in the history of this institution. Looking back at the proceedings of the previous meetings in Varenna, one can appreciate the rapid progress in the field of plasma diagnostics over the past 20 years. The 1995 workshop was co-organised by the Istituto di Fisica del Plasma of the National Research Council (CNR). In contrast to previous Varenna meetings on diagnostics, which have covered diagnostics in present-day tokamaks and which have had a substantial tutorial component, the 1995 workshop concentrated specifically on the problems and challenges of ITER diagnostics. ITER (the International Thennonuclear Experimental Reactor, a joint venture of Europe, Japan, Russia, and the United States, presently under design) will need to measure a wide range of plasma parameters in order to reach and sustain high levels of fusion power. A list of the measurement requirements together with the parameter ranges, target measurement resolutions, and accuracies provides the starting point for selecting a list of candidate diagnostic systems.

During 1991, the activities of the John Hopkins University Plasma Spectroscopy Group have covered several areas of research, in the domain of XUV spectroscopy of magnetically confined fusion plasmas. While the main effort concentrated on the development of novel diagnostics which utilize Layered Synthetic Microstructures (LSMs) as the dispersive/filtering elements, work has been done in the area of detector development and the physics of the tokamak edge plasma. An XUV monochromator for the 20--200Å range, which uses flat LSMs, has been built and is currently operated on the D3-D tokamak at General Atomics in San Diego. A design for a follow-up experiment at D3-D is now in progress. As a preliminary step toward tokamak plasma imaging in the XUV wavelength range using curved LSM coated substrates, a prototype XUV camera was built and operated in our laboratory in image the A1 3 emission at?-175Å from a Penning Ionization Discharge plasma. Based on these laboratory results, the design of the XUV camera, which will image plasma in the Phaedrus T tokamak O VI emission (150Å), has been completed. This instrument is presently under construction. Also a detailed design of a system composed of four LSM based imaging devices for N{sub e}(0) and T{sub e}(0) fluctuation measurements on TEXT has been completed. The accuracy and the uniformity of the LSM coatings on flat and small curved surfaces used in the above-mentioned instruments have been evaluated in our laboratory using an in-house built calibration facility and at the SURF II synchrotron at the National Institute of Standards and Technology.
