This work investigates the trading behavior of retail investors in the largest European market place for bank-issued structured products - the European Warrant Exchange (EUWAX). Structured products are designed to grant retail investors access to a broad range of risk-return combinations, ranging from conservative investment products to high-risk leverage products. The focus of the analysis is on the question, how retail investors react to new information and which sources are taken into account when speculating and investing.The key finding is that retail investors actively trade on information, but their trading behavior exhibits various behavioral biases and irrational trading patterns such as herding, overconfidence as well as excessive optimism and risk-taking.In sum, the informational efficiency of retail investor trading in structured products is limited, which underscores the demand for increased efforts by policy makers and financial institutions to improve the financial literacy of retail investors.

This paper analyzes structured products with a focus on the Swiss market. Empirical results for these products' five major categories are presented, along with case studies and a general discussion. The paper addresses three main questions: How did structured products perform in the period starting in the Great Financial Crisis 2008 until 2014? The study shows that 80% of all issued products have a positive performance. What are the costs for investors at issuance? How can structured products be used? Several case studies distinguish investments in normal market conditions from event-driven investments made when markets are under stress. A main focus is on the SNB and ECB decisions of January 2015: the removal of the EUR/CHF cap and the introduction of negative CHF interest rates, and the decision to apply a program of quantitative easing in the eurozone, respectively.

We analyze the investment behavior of private clients concerning structured products. To ascertain their stated and revealed preferences, we use a questionnaire and a field experiment, respectively. The real product issued in the field experiment is comparable to the hypothetical product in the questionnaire in both payoff and communication. We find that a product described in simple words strongly motivates people to invest in structured products for the first time, and also eliminates gender differences. The latter result also appears under true market conditions for the real product. However, the real product attracts far fewer first-time buyers than we expected from the questionnaire results. The size and distribution of the investment amounts are different in the two set-ups: although the questionnaire participants focus on their annual income situation, field experiment participants focus on wealth.
