The re-issue of a remarkable first novel by a young, gay, black author who fashioned a deeply moving and compelling coming of age story out of the highly controversial issues of bisexuality and AIDS. Law school, girlfriends, and career choices were all part of Raymond Tyler's life, but there were other, more terrifying issues for him to confront. Being black was tough enough, but Raymond was becoming more and more conscious of sexual feelings that he knew weren't "right." He was completely committed to Sela, his longtime girlfriend, but his attraction to Kelvin, whom he had met during his last year in law school, had become more than just a friendship. Fleeing to New York to escape both Sela and Kelvin, Raymond finds himself more confused than ever before. New relationships--both male and female--give him enormous pleasure but keep him from finding the inner peace and lasting love he so desperately desires. The horrible illness and death of a friend eventually force Raymond, at last, to face the truth.

Unruh applies the concept of the social world to the understanding of the social integration of older people. Social worlds are shared sets of perceptions, of which membership is very informal. The social life of older people in the art world, for example, often goes unseen by social workers and researchers. Unruh systematically explores the uses made by older people of social worlds and considers how the helping professions can use the concept to help older clients. Based on interviews with 40 older people, the book maintains a human and practical perspective while considering theoretical and research issues for gerontologists. It is the first systematic review of its subject.

Invisible Lives written by Colet van der Ven and has been published by Lannoo Publishers this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2018 with HIV infections categories.

With the exception of Africa, the highest percentage of HIV infections are found in high-risk groups such as drugs users, prostitutes, the transgender community, gay men, street children or prisoners. They encounter more stigmatisation and discrimination than other groups, which makes it harder for aid to reach them. Writer Colet van der Ven and photographer Adriaan Backer travelled around the world to give these people a voice: women in patriarchal Tadzhikistan, victims of political violence in Kenya, black homosexuals in the deeply religious southern states of America, transgenders in India, (ex-)prisoners in South Africa and drug users in Myanmar. They also interviewed a representative of the first generation of AIDS patients in the Netherlands and a female refugee in the Ukraine. AUTHORS: Colet van der Ven worked for many years in international aid organisations, in India and Haiti among other countries. Since 1985 she has written for various Dutch newspapers and journals. She has published nine books, including Het kwaad en ik (Evil and I), an exploration into the roots of violence. She has also worked as a radio and television presenter. Adriaan Backer has been active for twenty years now as a documentary photographer. He has worked for several relief organisations and his photographs have appeared in various daily newspapers and weeklies. Together with Ricus Dullaert he produced A Call to Witness, about AIDS in South Africa. With Colet van der Ven he published Slagschaduwen, erfenis van een koloniaal verleden (Cast shadows, legacy of a colonial past) on the traces left by slavery in present-day Curacao. Foreword is by international AIDS expert Peter Piot. SELLING POINTS: * A powerful plea to break through the taboo surrounding HIV and AIDS in stigmatised high-risk groups * Portraits of people with HIV and AIDS in the most vulnerable subcultures * Unique series of reports from all over the world with intimate and powerful photographs * Appears in the run-up to the International Aids Conference in Amsterdam from 23 to 27 July 2018 120 colour, 80 b/w images

This "gorgeously written" National Book Award finalist is a dazzling, heart-rending story of an oil rig worker whose closest friend goes missing, plunging him into isolation and forcing him to confront his past (NPR, One of the Best Books of the Year). One night aboard an oil drilling platform in the Atlantic, Waclaw returns to his cabin to find that his bunkmate and companion, Mátyás, has gone missing. A search of the rig confirms his fear that Mátyás has fallen into the sea. Grief-stricken, he embarks on an epic emotional and physical journey that takes him to Morocco, to Budapest and Mátyás's hometown in Hungary, to Malta, Italy, and finally to the mining town of his childhood in Germany. Waclaw's encounters along the way with other lost and yearning souls—Mátyás's angry, grieving half-sister; lonely rig workers on shore leave; a truck driver who watches the world change from his driver's seat—bring us closer to his origins while also revealing the problems of a globalized economy dependent on waning natural resources. High as the Waters Rise is a stirring exploration of male intimacy, the nature of memory and grief, and the cost of freedom—the story of a man who stands at the margins of a society from which he has profited little, though its functioning depends on his labor.
