Con la felice trasparenza propria dei grandi saggisti, che sanno affrontare le questioni più ardue e spinose e afferrarne come per incanto il bandolo nascosto, in "Manzoni e la via del romanzo" Giovanni Macchia indaga sulla nascita del più celebre – ma non per questo amato e conosciuto – romanzo della letteratura italiana: "I Promessi Sposi". Nascita quanto mai misteriosa e sconcertante, se si pensa alla desolata landa della tradizione italiana in questo ambito e soprattutto alla precedente attività di Manzoni, che – caso davvero unico – «fu dapprima un grande poeta lirico, poi un tragico, uno storico, un moralista, e infine un romanziere». Eppure i nessi con il Manzoni precedente permangono, fissi ed essenziali, se è vero – come Macchia dimostra – che la forma stessa del romanzo nasce in lui come sviluppo della funzione del coro nelle tragedie. E se è vero che la "Storia della Colonna Infame", ai "Promessi Sposi" indissolubilmente legata, lo inserisce «nella grande corrente inquisitoriale del romanzo moderno, da Stendhal a Dostoevskij». Ripercorrendo le tappe dell’intera opera manzoniana, dagli Inni sacri alle tragedie, e poi il tormentoso e accidentato iter del capolavoro, dal "Fermo e Lucia" all’edizione del 1827 e alla definitiva del 1840, Macchia punta con sicurezza il dito sugli aspetti più innovativi della riflessione dello scrittore e svela le progressive, folgoranti conquiste della sua officina, sullo sfondo della cultura europea. Così questo libro si configura come un invito alla lettura di Manzoni, innervato sul saggio che dà il titolo al volume (scritto per un’edizione francese dei "Promessi Sposi"), ma con l’aggiunta di significativi a parte, dove vediamo profilarsi anche le figure di Balzac e di Verdi.

Scritta da Manzoni tra il 1820 e il 1822, l'Adelchi è senza dubbio la più famosa tragedia dell'Ottocento romantico, qui riproposta con un apparato di note e un'introduzione che ne indicano le novità letterarie e ideali.
