In 1981, Chang and Coppi (Geophys. Res. Lett., 8, 1253) suggested that lower hybrid turbulence could be the prime candidate for the acceleration of ions and generation of ion conics in the high latitude ionosphere and magnetosphere. Subsequently, Retterer, Chang and Jasperse (J Geophys. Res., 91, 1609 (1986)) demonstrated that nonlinear wave interactions near the lower hybrid frequency through modulational instability, such as the collapse of waves into soliton (caviton) turbulence could play a key role in the energization of both the ambient ions and electrons. Recent sounding rocket observations in the source region of the topside auroral ionosphere seem to confirm the details of such predictions (Kintner et al., Phys. Rev. Lett., 68, 2448 (1992); Amoldy et al., Geophys. Res. Lea., 19, 413 (1992)). In this paper, the scenario of this interesting micro/meso scale, nonlinear wave-wave and wave-particle interaction plasma process in the auroral ionosphere/magnetosphere is briefly reviewed. During the past few decades, various investigations on nonlinear heating of the auroral region of the ionosphere and problems related to lower ionosphere are resulted in opening up a new dimension towards the study of various physical processes and also on the characteristics of different parameters of Atmospheric Electricity within the middle and lower ionosphere. This book embodies the results of some of the investigations in these areas. Some modeling works have been performed and results are compared with experimental data of other researchers. Some experiments were undertaken based on the own experimental arrangements from Kolkata and Agartala, India centers during disturbed ionospheric and atmospheric conditions and results are presented here. There are other areas to be explored and further studies are contemplated to gather more information. I shall deem my labour amply rewarded if the matters presented in the book prove to be useful and worthy to the scientific community in this field.

Radio Techniques For Probing The Terrestrial Ionosphere written by Robert D. Hunsucker and has been published by Springer Science & Business Media this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2013-03-07 with Science categories.

In the years since the pioneering efforts of Sir Edward Appleton, M. A. F. Barnett, G. Breit, and M. A. Thve, many radio techniques have been employed to investigate the terrestrial ionosphere. The purposes of this book are to exam ine the basic physical interaction process of radio waves with the ionosphere, scrutinize each of the radio techniques currently in use, and describe the elements of each technique, as well as assess their capabilities and limitations. I have included some of the history of each technique, since we often tend to forget the efforts of the "pioneers". The interaction of radio waves with the terrestrial ionosphere has been described in considerable detail in several "classic" treatments, e.g., Ratcliffe (1959), Al'pert (1963), Budden (1961) and Davies (1965), Rishbeth and e.g., Flock (1979), Davies Garriott (1969), and in other more recent books, (1990), Hargreaves (1979), and Budden (1985). A few of the radio techniques have been described by Hargreaves (1979) and a book by Giraud and Petit (1978) has also included discussion of several of the techniques. The "WITS" handbook No. 2 (1989) also contains description of several radio techniques.

Nonlinear Wave And Plasma Structures In The Auroral And Subauroral Geospace written by Evgeny Mishin and has been published by Elsevier this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2021-12-03 with Science categories.

Nonlinear Wave and Plasma Structures in the Auroral and Subauroral Geospace presents a comprehensive examination of the self-consistent processes leading to multiscale electromagnetic and plasma structures in the magnetosphere and ionosphere near the plasmapause, particularly in the auroral and subauroral geospace. It utilizes simulations and a large number of relevant in situ measurements conducted by the most recent satellite missions, as well as ground-based optical and radar observations to verify the conclusions and analysis. Including several case studies of observations related to prominent geospacer events, the book also provides experimental and numerical results throughout the chapters to further enhance understanding of how the same physical mechanisms produce different phenomena at different regions of the near-Earth space environment. Additionally, the comprehensive description of mechanisms responsible for space weather effects will give readers a broad foundation of wave and particle processes in the near-Earth magnetosphere. As such, Nonlinear Wave and Plasma Structures in the Auroral and Subauroral Geospace Nonlinear Wave and Plasma Structures in the Auroral and Subauroral Geospace is a cutting-edge reference for space physicists looking to better understand plasma physics in geospace. Presents a unified approach to wave and particle phenomena occurring in the auroral and subauroral geospace Summarizes the most current theoretical concepts related to the generation of the large-scale electric field near the plasmapause by flows of hot plasma from the reconnection site Includes case studies of the observations related to the most “famous events during the last 20 years as well as a large number of experimental and numerical results illustrated throughout the text
