Excerpt from Ireland and the Holy See: A Retrospect, 1866 V. 1883, Illegal and Seditious Movements in Ireland Contrasted With the Principles of the Catholic Church as Shown in the Writings of Cardinal Cullen How important is the teachin g of the Catholic Church upon this important matter 1 Guided by Divine Charity she ex horts the rich to put on bowels of compassion for the poor, to consider them as brethren, to respect them as members of J csus Christ; and at the same time she teaches the poor to respect the rights of property, to honour the rank and station of the great and powerful, to be obedient to those in authority, to be grateful for favours received and to pour forth fervent prayers for their benefactors 77. This pastoral address, which was read and adopted in full Synod, concludes With this quotation from Scripture: a Let every soul be subject to higher powers; for there is no power but from God; and those that are, are ordained of God. Render therefore to all men their dues. Tribute, to whom tribute is due: custom, to Whom custom: fear, to Whom fear: honour, to whom honour. Owe no man any thing but to love one another, for he that loveth his neighbour hath fulfilled the law. 1! This book builds upon research on the role of Catholicism in creating and strengthening a global Irish identity, complementing existing scholarship by adding a ‘Roman perspective’. It assesses the direct agency of the Holy See, its role in the Irish collective imagination, and the extent and limitations of Irish influence over the Holy See’s policies and decisions. Revealing the centrality of the Holy See in the development of a series of missionary connections across the Atlantic world and Rome, the chapters in this collection consider the formation, causes and consequences of these networks both in Ireland and abroad. The book offers a long durée perspective, covering both the early modern and modern periods, to show how Irish Catholicism expanded across continental Europe and over the Atlantic across three centuries. It also offers new insights into the history of Irish migration, exploring the position of the Irish Catholic clergy in Atlantic communities of Irish migrants.

La 4e de couverture indique : "Catholics in Ireland and England campaigning for relief from the penal laws, and later, for emancipation, were obliged to deal with the Holy See and the governments in Dublin and London. In return for concessions, the governments required them to provide 'securities' in the form of oaths that included allegiance to King George III and his successors and a rejection of the alleged 'claims' of the papacy which could be used to the detriment of the lawful authority of the British crown. The crown also sought the right to veto candidates for the episcopate whom it deemed unsuitable. These demands met with varying responses from the bishops of Ireland, the vicars apostolic of England, the Catholic laity in Ireland and England and the Holy See. Differences of opinion emerged between the conservative aristocrats and gentry in England, who were keen to take their seats in parliament, and the middle class activists in Ireland, who opposed the interference of the state in their religious affairs. This study examines these issues and the complex relationships between the Holy See, the bishops, the vicars apostolic and the Catholic committees."
