Excerpt from Irish Sport and Sportsmen In compiling this book I have been forced to confront many difficulties. Like all who venture on novel essays I found the most formidable obstacle was the one I least expected. Prior to entering on the task of placing before the public a reliable statement such as I proposed to produce, I had to look out for authentic records. The kindness with which many Masters of Hounds and others have seconded my endeavours was quite remarkable. I have a very grateful duty to fulfil when I acknowledge it in the most marked way; and though, for obvious reasons, I do not particularise by name my volunteers and assistants, I am not the less grateful to them. When I conceived the scheme of this publication, I thought that written stories of interesting information of the doings of Irish Sportsmen, long since dead, their horses and their hounds, might be dug up by industrious research. Jerrold Casway coined the phrase "The Emerald Age of Baseball" to describe the 1890s, when so many Irish names dominated teams' rosters. But one can easily agree--and expand--that the period from the mid-1830s well into the first decade of the 20th century and assign the term to American sports in general. This book covers the Irish sportsman from the arrival of James "Deaf" Burke in 1836 through to Jack B. Kelly's rejection by Henley regatta and his subsequent gold medal at the 1920 Olympics. It avoids recounting the various victories and defeats of the Irish sportsman, seeking instead to deal with the complex interaction that he had with alcohol, gambling and Sunday leisure: pleasures that were banned in most of America at some time or other between 1836 and 1920. This book also covers the Irish sportsman's close relations with politicians, his role in labor relations, his violent lifestyle--and by contrast--his participation in bringing respectability to sport. It also deals with native Irish sports in America, the part played by the Irish in "Team USA's" initial international sporting ventures, and in the making and breaking of amateurism within sport.

This history of sport in Ireland, locates it within Irish political, social, and cultural history, and within the global history of sport. There are aspects of Ireland's sporting history that are uniquely Irish, but it is a history of play shared with other societies, near and far. This book offers a unique insight into the British Empire in Ireland; it also assesses the relationship between sport and national identity, and the manner in which states make policy in respect of sport. The manner in which sport has been colonised by the media and has colonised it, in turn, is also examined.

Sport has played a central role in modern Ireland’s history. Perhaps nowhere else has sport so infused the political, social and cultural development and identity of a nation. During this so-called ‘Decade of Centenaries’ in Ireland (2014 to 2024) recently there has been an exponential growth in interest and academic research on Ireland’s sporting heritage. This collection of chapters, contributed by some of Ireland’s most preeminent sport and social historians, showcases the richness and complexity of Ireland’s sporting legacy. Articles on topics as diverse as the role of native Gaelic games in emphasising the emerging cultural nationalism of pre-Revolutionary Ireland, the contribution of Irish rugby to the broader British war effort in World War 1, the emergence of Irish soccer on the international stage, and the long running battle to gain official recognition within international athletics for an independent Irish state, are presented. This work’s intention is to illustrate some of the latest and most vibrant research being conducted on Irish sports history. This book was published as a special issue of Sport in Society.
