Excerpt from Irish Fairy and Folk Tales Then merrily, merrily went their tabor, And merrily went their toes. But now, in the times of James, they had all gone, for they were of the old profession, and their songs were Ave Maries. In Ireland they are still extant, giving gifts to the kindly, and plaguing the surly. Have you ever seen a fairy or such like? I asked an old man in County Sligo. Amn't I annoyed with tbem, was the answer. Do the fishermen along here know anything of the mermaids? I asked a woman of a village in County Dublin. Indeed, they don't like to see them at all, she answered, for they always bring bad weather. Here is a man who believes in ghosts, said a foreign sea-cap tain, pointing to a pilot of my acquaintance. In every house over there, said the pilot, pointing to his native village of Rosses, there are several. Certainly that now old and much respected dogmatist, the Spirit of the Age, has in no manner made his voice heard down there. In a little while, for he has gotten a consumptive appear of late, he will be covered over decently in his grave. Excerpt from Irish Fairy Tales: Edited With an Introduction AM often doubted when I say that the Irish peasantry still believe in fairies. People think I am merely trying to bring back a little of the old dead beautiful world of romance into this century of great engines and spinning-jinnies. Surely the hum of wheels and clatter of printing presses, to let alone the lecturers with their black coats and tumblers of water, have driven away the goblin kingdom and made. Excerpt from Tales of Irish Life The following Tales, with others, were written many years ago, before I became a resident of Hongkong, and when I had more leisure to devote to literary pursuits than I have since had; they were all, however, written more or less hurriedly in fact, during intervals between the hours of professional duty, usually devoted to exercise and relaxation. All of them, save The Story of an Orange Lodge, appeared from time to time in periodicals of the day. The story named was published in a separate volume in 1864; my object in writing it being, to decry the Orange Confederation, which I then thought, and still consider, a senseless and mischievous organization, alike disgraceful to its members as to Ireland. Conscious as I am of all their faults and 1mper fections, I have reproduced some of these tales in this volume, for private circulation only: they serve to recall younger and happier days, and should their perusal afford the reader a small share of the pleasure their production has given me, I shall be well repaid for my trouble. Excerpt from Amusing Irish Tales Ultimately, while still resident in Dublin, he became acquainted with the Rev. Caesar Otway. At this gentle man's suggestion young Carleton wrote a tale for one of the magazines, which attracted general notice. This formed the second turning point in the young man's life, and showed to himself and friends where his forte lay. From this period a long stream of writings came from the talented author's pen, both through separate volumes and through the magazine press. In all, the volumes he became author of amounted to over forty in number. Many of his novels and tales exhibit singular power and talent, and have universally been acknowledged as giving true and faithful representations of the social life of his countrymen. William Carleton died in 1869 at the age of seventy-one. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books.
