Excerpt from Reminiscences of the Early Anthracite-Iron Industry, Vol. 29: An Address Delivered Before the American Institute of Mining Engineers, at the California Meeting, September, 1899 The specimen of anthracite coal which I hold in my hand, insignificant as it may appear to the casual observer, speaks volumes to me and to the initiated, as it suggests and represents the entire evolution of the use of anthracite coal in the manufacture of pig-iron, the growth and development of which it is my purpose to review here to-day. During our recent visit to the Mountain Copper Co.'s works at Keswick, I picked up this piece of coal from a pile of anthracite lying in the yard, asked Mr. Edwards, the manager, a countryman of mine, where it came from, and, to my surprise and delight, discovered that it had been brought all the way from Wales, and had come out of the identical vein which my father opened near Yniscedwin, about eighty years ago. I had no idea, before this incident, of contributing to the already full and complete programme of the day; but, being requested by our distinguished President and Secretary to do so, I consented to relate here the story which this remarkable find naturally brought back to my mind. David Thomas, my revered father, called by his Welsh countrymen "the pioneer of the anthracite iron-trade in America," was one of the principal actors in the history of manufacturing pig-iron with anthracite coal. I shall give here my personal recollections of his early experiments, trials, and final successes, as frequently related by him to me, together with quotations from a biographical sketch by E. Roberts, found in the number for October, 188-3, of the "Red Dragon," the national magazine of Wales. Mr. Roberts's narrative is authentic, by reason of his free access to the records of the Yniscedwin anthracite iron-works during his long connection with them. Excerpt from Quicksilver Resources of California: With a Section on Metallurgy and Ore-Dressing The important uses of quicksilver are the recovery of gold and silver from ores by amalgamation, the manufacture of fulminate for explosive caps, of electrical appliances and scientific apparatus, and in the preparation of drugs, vermilion, and an anti-fouling paint for ships' bottoms. Another interesting use to which quicksilver is also put, though in which it is not 'consumed, ' is as a floating bearing for the re volving lenses of lighthouses. About 600 pounds of quicksilver are required (depending on the size of the light) - being placed in a ciren lar groove or channel. The lens or lighting unit is set on a pontoon which. In turn, rests and revolves on the mercury. As the metal is not consumed, the loss after installation is insignificant. By far the great est consumption of quicksilver is in the manufacture of fulminate and of drugs. The increased adoption of the cyanide process in place of amalgamation in the treatment of gold and silver ores has materially decreased that demand for quicksilver of recent years, particularly in the western United States and in Mexico. The newest use for quick silver is the introduction of a small amount into the cylinders of steam turbines to improve the vapor pressure and thus increase efficiency. Excerpt from Geology and Mineral Resources of the Neenach Quadrangle, California Sir: I have the honor to transmit herewith Bulletin 153, Geology and Mineral Resources of the Neenach Quadrangle, California, prepared under the direction of Olaf P. Jenkins, Chief of the Division of Mines, Department of Natural Resources. The report is accompanied by a number of maps, charts, and illustrations, including a detailed geologic map, lithographed in color, of the 15-minute Neenach quadrangle. The area of this quadrangle is nearly 250 square miles, covering portions of the Tehachapi Mountains and Antelope Valley in Kern and Los Angeles Counties. Two famous earthquake fault zones, the San Andreas and Garlock faults, pass through the area mapped. Their junction point lies several miles to the west at Gorman and Lebec where State Highway 99 cuts through the Tejon Pass. It is significant that the area mapped contains tin deposits discovered and prospected during World War I. These, together with gold, copper, tungsten, molybdenum, marble and limestone, crushed rock, volcanic ash and ground water, are described in this bulletin. The author, John H. Wiese, prepared the report while in the employ of the United States Geological Survey and in connection with graduate study at the University of California at Los Angeles. Cooperating with the Federal Survey and the State University, the State Division has helped to sponsor the undertaking and is publishing the results of the work as one of its series of bulletins. Excerpt from The ABC of Iron Iron is found in almost all forms of rock, clay and earth, and its presence is shown by their colors, iron being one of the commonest of natural mineral coloring ingredients. We find it in small proportions in plants and in larger quantities in the bodies of animals, especially in the blood, which is said to contain about per cent. Of iron, imparting its color. Except in the case of meteorites, large metallic masses which occasionally fall to the earth, sometimes of enormous size and of unknown origin, iron is not found in the metallic state.
