Stanley Fish is one of America's most stimulating literary theorists. In this book, he undertakes a reexamination of some of criticism's most basic assumptions. He penetrates to the core of the modern debate about interpretation, explodes numerous misleading formulations, and offers a proposal for a new way of thinking about the way we read.

This volume is offered as a tribute to George Brooke to mark his sixty-fifth birthday. It has been conceived as a coherent contribution to the question of textuality in the Dead Sea Scrolls explored from a wide range of perspectives. These include material aspects of the texts, performance, reception, classification, scribal culture, composition, reworking, form and genre, and the issue of the extent to which any of the texts relate (to) social realities in the Second Temple period. Almost every contribution engages with Brooke’s own remarkably wide-ranging, incisive, and innovative research on the Scrolls. The twenty-eight contributors are colleagues and students of the honouree and include leading scholars alongside promising new voices from across the field.

Out Of Eden written by Beverly J. Stratton and has been published by A&C Black this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 1995-01-01 with Religion categories.
Out of Eden contributes towards conversations about interpreting scripture. Rather than adopting traditional views (creation and 'fall' or growth), this study integrates literary-critical theories and feminist scholarship to read the Genesis narrative in relation to concerns of contemporary communities. The question of how we might engage the interpretative process and the rhetorical power of texts as we live our lives 'out of Eden' is addressed. Stratton argues that the interpretration of Genesis 2-3 matters, that there are consequences for the actions we take on the basis of our interpretations, and that we should enter the interpretative process only with care.

The Spirit In The Book Of Revelation written by Robby Waddell and has been published by BRILL this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2019-08-26 with Religion categories.
The investigation centres on the role of the Spirit in Revelation, which the author considers is best defined as the Spirit of Prophecy. A survey of scholarship on the pneumatology of the Apocalypse is followed by a study of intertextual connections. The author’s own religious context within Pentecostalism then informs a possible hermeneutic that is faithful to the ethos of the movement. Biblical and literary studies are situated within the context of a Pentecostal community as attention is paid to the prophecy concerning the temple and the witnesses in Rev 11. This key passage is shown to form the theological as well as the literary centre of the Spirit’s role in Revelation.

The Gospel of Mark includes a series of similar episodes in which he presents minor characters and their response to Jesus. These individuals are neither disciples nor opponents of Jesus but rather people who are drawn, in a broad sense, from the crowd. Mark presents these characters either as suppliants or as those who exemplify a proper response to Jesus and his way. The purpose of this narrative study is to explore the effect of Mark's presentation of minor characters on the reader. It traces Mark's treatment of these individuals through the narrative and shows how Mark's presentation of minor characters moves the reader toward an acceptance of the demands of following Jesus.

The Reading Of Theoretical Texts written by Peter Ekegren and has been published by Routledge this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2002-01-04 with Social Science categories.
Since the structuralist debates of the 1970s the field of textual analysis has largely remained the preserve of literary theorists. Social scientists, while accepting that observation is theory laden have tended to take the meaning of texts as given and to explain differences of interpretation either in terms of ignorance or bias. In this important contribution to methodological debate, Peter Ekegren uses developments within literary criticism, philosophy and critical theory to reclaim this study for the social sciences and to illuminate the ways in which different readings of a single text are created and defended.

Throughout its history, the United States has struggled with the inevitable tensions of a highly diverse society. With the opening of higher education to women, ethnic minorities, and members of other previously marginalized groups, these tensions are now visited most especially upon our nation's colleges and universities. This collection addresses the most controversial issues now troubling our campuses: the content of the curriculum, sexual harassment and date rape, hate speech v. free speech, and affirmative action. In addition, several contributions probe the fundamental issues underlying the more specific problems of the "politics of difference." The contributions to this volume represent a wide range of disciplines - including philosophy, history, literary theory, law, economics, and politics - as well as views from across the political spectrum. Readers will find both familiar essays and new ones, arranged so that the authors speak directly to one another, thus providing a genuine conversation.
