The belief in curses is widespread in Africa, impacting the lived reality of both Christians and non-Christians alike. In this book, Godwin Adeboye provides practical, biblical, and contextual guidelines for addressing the African conception of cursing, and for ministering to the fear and confusion such cursing elicits. He argues that African evangelical theology must begin by understanding, and valuing, the unique experiences of African Christians if it is to offer relevant answers to the real dilemmas they face. To this end, Adeboye draws on African traditional beliefs, empirical research, and the teachings of popular African pastors to provide insight into the religious and cultural contexts of the contemporary African church. Against this backdrop, he explores biblical passages on cursing and utilizes the evangelical positions on biblical authority, the atonement, personal conversion, and active mission to evaluate cultural beliefs and bring them into alignment with the gospel. While this text is an excellent resource for students of theology, missiology, and biblical or cultural studies, it is also immensely practical and deeply pastoral. Ultimately, it is a book to empower believers to confront their fear of curses equipped with the truth of Scripture.

I n Africa: The Glory, the Curse, the Remedy; the author Anthony Agbo in a spectacular and inspirational detail researched the bible and rare ancient authorities to establish that God through the mouths of His Prophets, pronounced broad and far reaching curses on Africa and Africans, the result of which put the continent and her people in the negative side of all indices of human fortune, growth and development. Tracing the African family tree from the patriarch Noah through her phenomenal rise and greatness in ancient time, to her sudden downfall, the author in an amazing inspirational treatise, woven with extra-ordinary suspense unveiled: the character and activities of the enigmatic biblical figure, Nimrod, the great African and first world ruler, who built the Tower of Babel, openly confronted the God of Heaven and originated Idolatry, the worship of the gods of wood and stone thereby leading Africans astray; the identity and pioneering works of Tehuti, the great African who laid the foundation for all academic knowledge on earth, and who the ancient Greeks referred to as the master of all masters and the greatest of all greats; the journey of the biblical Ark of the covenant in the ancient time from Jerusalem to Ethiopia where it resides today; why and how God cursed Africa and how this curse has impacted on the lives and endeavors of the black race; what is it that can return Africa to future world dominion; etc. This is a book of extraordinary revelations about Africa and God, her glory and curse-propelled downfall as well as remedial prescriptions.

The rest of the world has moved forward whilst Africa has largely remained stagnant and has in many instances gone backwards. Africa's growth is hampered by self-inflicted problems: a palpable lack of visionary leadership; lack of accountability in government and the civil service; the cancer of corruption; the wholesale lack of service delivery; erosion of morality and societal values; the love of false prophets and allure of cheap grace; lack of respect for self, for others, for opportunities offered and for the rule of law. Anarchy reigns in many countries; the law seems to have accepted defeat and societies have been desensitised to abominable crimes. There has been an erosion too of national pride and patriotism, and a preponderance for abrogation of duty and an unwillingness to take responsibility. Those who care about Africa have gone through a gamut of emotions - from anger, frustration, pain, embarrassment and shame at the glaring lack of development in Africa and the seeming indifference of the ruling elite and the so-called leaders of African society. Who is to blame for the sorry state of Africa? The jockey who drove the horse of colonial oppression? Unscrupulous and greedy political leaders? Western powers? No! The real danger to Africa and the root of all its misery is the citizen - uncaring, unconcerned, self-absorbed, self-centered, quick to rush to support the indefensible, small minded and with a laisse faire attitude to life and everything; quick to complain about unemployment, corruption, poor healthcare systems, poor education, lack of services among others, but failing to acknowledge responsibility as the primary enabler of these through unqualified unyielding support of those so-called leaders, who wreak havoc and cause desolation and pain on nation states. Yes, it is the citizen who gives public consent to those who keep Africa in bondage. It is the citizen who litters the streets, gives poor service, oversees the breakdown of morality and family by not setting the right values and setting bad examples for their children. It's the citizen who does not keep time, provides poor service, enables crime and corrupt activities by looking the other way, refuses to look for the greater good in everything, but rather obsesses over self to the detriment of the whole. The intent of this book is to get conversations going; provoke and enrage Africans to be charged up enough to do something about the state of their beloved continent. Gandhi once reminded us, 'Be the change that you wish to see in the world'. Wake up from your slumber African citizen for when you do, Africa's immense potential and the fullness of its promise will be realized; Africa will awake and take its place among continents, and its member states, their rightful place among the nations of the world. Arise, sleeping Lion. Arise!!

How old is prejudice against black people? Were the racist attitudes that fueled the Atlantic slave trade firmly in place 700 years before the European discovery of sub-Saharan Africa? In this groundbreaking book, David Goldenberg seeks to discover how dark-skinned peoples, especially black Africans, were portrayed in the Bible and by those who interpreted the Bible--Jews, Christians, and Muslims. Unprecedented in rigor and breadth, his investigation covers a 1,500-year period, from ancient Israel (around 800 B.C.E.) to the eighth century C.E., after the birth of Islam. By tracing the development of anti-Black sentiment during this time, Goldenberg uncovers views about race, color, and slavery that took shape over the centuries--most centrally, the belief that the biblical Ham and his descendants, the black Africans, had been cursed by God with eternal slavery. Goldenberg begins by examining a host of references to black Africans in biblical and postbiblical Jewish literature. From there he moves the inquiry from Black as an ethnic group to black as color, and early Jewish attitudes toward dark skin color. He goes on to ask when the black African first became identified as slave in the Near East, and, in a powerful culmination, discusses the resounding influence of this identification on Jewish, Christian, and Islamic thinking, noting each tradition's exegetical treatment of pertinent biblical passages. Authoritative, fluidly written, and situated at a richly illuminating nexus of images, attitudes, and history, The Curse of Ham is sure to have a profound and lasting impact on the perennial debate over the roots of racism and slavery, and on the study of early Judaism, Christianity, and Islam.

For hundreds of years, the biblical story of the Curse of Ham was marshalled as a justification of serfdom, slavery and human bondage. According to the myth, having seen his father Noah naked, Ham's is cursed to have his descendants be forever slaves. In this new book the Curse of Ham is explored in its Reformation context, revealing how it became the cornerstone of the Christian defence of slavery and the slave trade for the next four hundred years. It shows how broader medieval interpretations of the story became marginalized in the early modern period as writers such as Annius of Viterbo and George Best began to weave the legend of Ham into their own books, expanding and adding to the legend in ways that established a firm connection between Ham, Africa, slavery and race. For although in the original biblical text Ham himself is not cursed and race is never mentioned, these writers helped develop the story of Ham into an ideological and theological defence for African slavery, at the precise time that the Transatlantic Slave Trade began to establish itself as a major part of the European economy during the sixteenth and seventeenth centuries. Skilfully weaving together elements of theology, literature and history, this book provides a fascinating insight into the ways that issues of religion, economics and race could collide in the Reformation world. It will prove essential reading, not only for those with an interest in early modern history, but for anyone wishing to try to comprehend the origins of arguments used to justify slavery and segregation right up to the 1960s.

Africa Is Not Cursed is systematic analysis of the challenges that affect Africa today. With its wealth of natural and human resources, one would expect Africa to enjoy strong economic growth. However, across the continent, economic development remains stagnant, and many people are wondering if Africa might actually be cursed. This book examines Africa's challenges in politics, education, agriculture, health care, transportation, the status of women, resource management, and infrastructure and points out how systematic failures in each area have resulted in Africa's condition today. Based on his analysis, Dr. Lugolobi proposes solutions to help Africa overcome its so-called curse and ultimately stimulate the movement of its impoverished people into the middle class sustainably.
