This book continues the saga of the progeny of the Marciari family, founded in Florence during the Renaissance, wandering through many European countries, losing contacts, but over time migrating to the new continent. Commencing as the Thirteen English Colonies in America are preparing to launch their struggle for independence from the mother country, the novel continues to present times a history of the United States. Told from the chronicles of family descendants, the reader becomes a part of the individual lives of those who created American Exceptionalism. Reflecting America, these "cousins" work closely with the titans of history. Through their records, we observe George Washington as he ponders the fate of the patriot troops at Valley Forge; experience the dangers of the unknown with the expedition of Lewis and Clark exploring the new lands obtained through the Louisiana Purchase from Napoleon Bonaparte; or live through the long trek across the United States in a covered wagon to California during the Gold Rush. We participate in the meetings conducted by J. P. Morgan as he provides advice to President Cleveland in resolving the Panic of 1893, watch a cousin decline Teddy Roosevelt's invitation to join the Rough Riders; or become absorbed with Woodrow Wilson's problems with his Peace Plans. Suffer the agonies of loved ones killed in war, the depravations and anxieties of those with jobs eliminated and homes lost in the Great Depression and Dust storms of the nineteen thirties. The innovative new government generated administration and emulation. As the nation grew in size, population and wealth, it gained the appellation, exceptionalism, becoming the envy of the world. However, the challenges facing the new culture soon demonstrated the ugly features of human nature Confiscation of Native Americans lands Enslavement of millions of Africans Barriers to immigration Delays in providing assistance to nations beset by invasion Wide income gap between the wealthy and poor Continuation of racial discrimination Violence perpetuated by gun ownership

What is America? Is it a hegemonic superpower, composed of ruthlessly selfish capitalists? Or is it a land of hope and glory, a shelter for the huddled masses, and a beacon of freedom and enlightenment? The definition of this complex nation has been debated substantially, yet all seem to agree on one thing: it is unique. The idea of an exceptional America can be traced all the way back to Alexis de Tocqueville's nineteenth-century observations of a newly formed democracy that seemed determined to distinguish itself from the rest. Little, it seems, has changed. Building on de Tocqueville's concept of American exceptionalism, this collection of essays, contributed by some of the nation's top scholars and thinkers, takes on the weighty task of sizing up America in a way its people and others can comprehend. Far more than simple history, they outline the current state of American institutions and policies -- from the legal system to marriage to the military to the Drug War -- and anticipate where these are headed in the future.

American Exceptionalism written by Volker Depkat and has been published by Rowman & Littlefield this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2021-11-15 with History categories.

The idea that America is exceptional, whether because of its founding creed, natural abundance, or Protestant origins, has been the subject of fierce debate going back to the founding. Rather than argue for one side or the other, Volker Depkat explores the diverse ways in which Americans have described their country as exceptional. Describing how narratives of exceptionalism have never been a purely American affair, Depkat shows how, for example, European, African, and Asian immigrants projected their own dreams and nightmares onto the American screen, contributing to the intellectual construction of America. In fact, the different groups living in America have described American exceptionalism in such differing terms that there hardly ever was a shared understanding as to what these exceptional experiences were and how to interpret them. What has unified the disparate exceptionalist narratives, Depkat explains, is their insistence on America's universalist and future-oriented way of life. In engaging and lucid prose, Depkat offers general readers and students of American history an invaluable lens through which they can evaluate for themselves the merits of the many ways in which Americans have understood their country as exceptional.

Exceptional America written by Mugambi Jouet and has been published by Univ of California Press this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2017-04-03 with Social Science categories.

Why did Donald Trump follow Barack Obama into the White House? Why is America so polarized? And how does American exceptionalism explain these social changes? In this provocative book, Mugambi Jouet describes why Americans are far more divided than other Westerners over basic issues, including wealth inequality, health care, climate change, evolution, gender roles, abortion, gay rights, sex, gun control, mass incarceration, the death penalty, torture, human rights, and war. Raised in Paris by a French mother and Kenyan father, Jouet then lived in the Bible Belt, Manhattan, and beyond. Drawing inspiration from Alexis de Tocqueville, he wields his multicultural sensibility to parse how the intense polarization of U.S. conservatives and liberals has become a key dimension of American exceptionalism—an idea widely misunderstood as American superiority. While exceptionalism once was a source of strength, it may now spell decline, as unique features of U.S. history, politics, law, culture, religion, and race relations foster grave conflicts. They also shed light on the intriguing ideological evolution of American conservatism, which long predated Trumpism. Anti-intellectualism, conspiracy-mongering, a visceral suspicion of government, and Christian fundamentalism are far more common in America than the rest of the Western world—Europe, Canada, Australia, and New Zealand. Exceptional America dissects the American soul, in all of its peculiar, clashing, and striking manifestations.

It's been said America has seen her best days. In this search for the formula for American exceptionalism, Lt. Frank Moore recounts moments of exceptionalism in his experiences on 9/11, the heroism he witnessed during his FDNY career, and our country's heroic story. He contrasts America past to America present to identify what's changed, and one ingredient stands out-a Judeo-Christian foundation, there from the beginning, that is being erased today. Evidence shows the Founders did not simply believe in Christian principles, but that God visibly acted on behalf of the new country. America the Exceptional is America's siren call to turn around and return to the formula for true greatness.

In Understanding American Exceptionalism, David Nordmark explores the roots of just what made America unique to begin with. American Exceptionalism In The Age Of Obama written by Stephen Brooks and has been published by Routledge this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2013 with Exceptionalism categories.

The election of President Obama in 2008 and the apparent decline of American power in the world has rekindled an old and important debate. Is the United States exceptional in its values and institutions, as well as in the role that it is destined to play in world affairs? In this book, Stephen Brooks argues that American exceptionalism has been and continues to be real. In making this argument he focuses on five aspects of American politics and society that are most crucial to an understanding of American exceptionalism today. They include the appropriate relationship between the state and citizens, religion, socio-economic mobility, America's role in the world, and ideas about the Constitution. American exceptionalism matters in domestic politics chiefly as a political narrative around which support for and opposition to certain policies, values and vision of American society coalesce. But in world affairs it is not the story but the empirical reality of American exceptionalism that matters. Although the long era of America's global economic dominance has entered what might be called a period of diminished expectations, the United States remains exceptional--the indispensable nation--in world affairs and is likely to remain so for many years to come.

Exceptional America written by Mugambi Jouet and has been published by Univ of California Press this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2017-04-03 with Political Science categories.

Why does a country built on the concept of liberty have the highest incarceration rate in the world? How could the first Western nation to elect a person of color as its leader suffer from institutional racism? How does Christian fundamentalism coexist with gay marriage in the American imagination? In essence, what makes the United States exceptional? In this provocative exploration of American exceptionalism, Mugambi Jouet examines why Americans are far more divided than other Westerners over basic issues—including wealth inequality, health care, climate change, evolution, the literal truth of the Bible, abortion, gay rights, gun control, mass incarceration, and war. Drawing inspiration from Alexis de Tocqueville, Jouet, raised in Paris by a French mother and a Kenyan father, wields his multicultural sensibility to parse the ways in which the intense polarization of U.S. conservatives and liberals has become a key dimension of American exceptionalism—an idea widely misunderstood to mean American superiority. Instead, Jouet contends that exceptionalism, once a source of strength, may now spell decline, as unique features of U.S. history, politics, law, culture, religion, and race relations foster grave conflicts and injustices. This book offers a brilliant dissection of the American soul, in all of its outsize, clashing, and striking manifestations.

American Exceptionalism provokes intense debates culturally, economically, politically, and socially. This collection, edited by Charles W. Dunn of Regent University's Robertson School of Government, brings together analysis of the idea's origins, history and future. Contributors include: Hadley Arkes, Michael Barone, James W. Ceasar, Charles W. Dunn, Daniel L. Dreisbach, T. David Gordon, Steven Hayward, Hugh Heclo, Marvin J. Kolkertsma, William Kristol, and George H. Nash. While many now argue against the policies and ideology of American Exceptionalism as antiquated and expired, the authors collected here make the bold claim that a closer reading of our own history reveals that there is still an exceptional aspect of American thought, identity and government worth advancing and protecting. It will be the challenge of the coming American generations to both refine and examine what we mean when we call America "exceptional," and this book provides readers a first step towards a necessary understanding of the exceptional purpose, progress and promise of the United States of America.
