What does it mean to hope for heaven? Brian Hebblethwaite traces the background to the Christian hope in the faith of Israel, examines its primary basis in the acts of God in the story of Jesus Christ, and follows the history of Christian attitudes to the future of humanity and of creation throughout the Christian centuries. TheChristian Hope tells the complex story of the different strands, emphases and problems that have developed between biblical times and our own in the quest to understand 'the four last things' - death, judgement, heaven and hell. Hebblethwaite concentrates our attention on the modern period since 1900, an era when modern Christian theology has witnessed a remarkable recovery of interest in hope and the future as dominant motifs in its reflections. The discoveries of modern science have affected Christian hope and Christian understanding of creation and its ultimate destiny. At different stages in the history of the church, very different stresses have been laid on the present or on the future, on hope for the individual or on hope for society, on this-worldly hope or on other-worldly hope. Through a study of the basis of Christian hope and of the history of its interpretation, Hebblethwaite aims to present a balanced view of these different elements in the Christian tradition and a credible eschatology for today.

With a gentlemans questionIs there hope for the Christian faith?lingering in his thoughts, William Floyd Dopp began to discover its answer while visiting churches in Africa. His experience with the powerful and vibrant life of African Christians, especially in the Anglican churches in Uganda, contrasted sharply with the foundering and fading communities of Christians he encountered in Europe and North America. Is There Hope for the Christian Faith? shares the results of the authors grappling with this haunting and hopeful question. He tells how the church in Africa, epitomized by a church convention sign that proclaimed, Jesus is our living hope, provides a sense of promise to churches like one in London, where a brochure noted the churchs purpose: Preserving Holy Worship. Five hundred years after Martin Luther called for reform, a new call has led to the beginnings of another reform of the church. Is There Hope for the Christian Faith? looks at why the church faces so many challenges and explores the hope shown by mission-minded Christians, great Christian authors, and mission-driven ministries in Africa. Yes, there is hope. The sign in Africa says it allJesus is our living hope.

What S The Least I Can Believe And Still Be A Christian written by Martin Thielen and has been published by Westminster John Knox Press this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2013-01-01 with Religion categories.

Pastor and author Martin Thielen has compiled a list of ten things people need to believe, and ten things they don't, in order to be a Christian. This lively and engaging book will be a help to seekers as well as a comfort to believers who may find themselves questioning some of the assumptions they grew up with. With an accessible, storytelling style that's grounded in solid biblical scholarship, Thielen shows how Christians don't need to believe that sinners will be "left behind" to burn in hell or that it's heresy to believe in evolution. And while we must always take the Bible seriously, we don't always have to take it literally. At the same time, Christians do need to believe in Jesus--his life, his teachings, his death and resurrection, and his vision for the world. A great benefit of those beliefs is that they provide promising answers to life's most profound questions, including: Where is God? What matters most? What brings fulfillment? What about suffering? Is there hope? Thielen articulates centrist, mainline Christianity in a way that's fresh and easy to understand, and offers authentic Christian insights that speak to our deepest needs. This new edition includes a leader's guide, previously only available online, and a new introduction from the author that reflects on the book's reception. The leader's guide features unique and easily implemented aids for carrying out a seven-week, congregation-wide initiative that will help local churches reach out to their communities. Handbook containing everything a guest needs for Hope Explored, a three-session, video-based outreach program showing that Christianity offers real hope, peace, and purpose. There are few emotions more powerful than hope. But these days, hope often feels hard to come by. Where can we find a hope that won’t disappoint us? Looking at the life, death, and resurrection of Jesus in Luke’s Gospel, this three-session series from Christianity Explored Ministries shows that Christianity is about real hope: a joyful expectation for the future, based on true events in the past, which changes everything about my present. It sounds good... but is it true? Whatever people do or don’t believe, Hope Explored offers them an opportunity to explore, to discuss, and to discover the hope, peace, and purpose Jesus offers. This easy-to-use guest Handbook contains everything a participant needs for Hope Explored. With only three sessions, Hope Explored does not require a huge time commitment and is one of the easiest ways to discover more about Christianity. It can be run in person or on video-meeting technology, in small groups or one on one. Leaders of this series will need a Leader's Handbook and the video sessions, which are available as downloads or on DVD. The videos are presented by Rico Tice, Founder of Christianity Explored Ministries. They introduce the concepts for each session (Hope, Peace, Purpose) and deliver compelling Bible teaching from Luke’s Gospel. The ideas are then discussed as participants look at the Bible passage together.

This is a Christian devotional book catered to young men and women who face objections about their faith. This is not a scientific or philosophical book but every now and then, you will find yourself reading some terms that you may not have heard before. I have also made a lot of references to other people's writings and used my own experiences as a backdraft to stress out some points. For many years, the secular world has treated the word "faith" as a jargon that cannot be proven by anything tangible or material. People who have faith are considered unreasonable and lack understanding of the "real" world. Sadly, some Christians who join churches rely on blind faith with no ability to defend their faith when they get cross-examined by a non-believer. I decided to focus on ten faith-related topics that are constantly asked by young Christians and also secular folks. In my experience, the topics or issues that every Christian would face are as follows:1.All about the scriptures - This deals with the Bible and why it still matters for us today. Many have attempted to treat the Bible as a mere fairy tale contrary to the powerful historical reliability of its stories. 2.Majesty of Creation - Many atheists and even some Christians are embracing the Darwinian theory of evolution. I listed down some arguments why the Genesis Creation is still the best explanation of the origin of life. 3.End-Time Preparation - Many believe we are living on end-times but it is important what kind of end are we looking at. If humanity will indeed end, how do we prepare for it? 4.Truth and Reformation - The 15th century and onwards saw the dawn of enlightenment across the world when Protestantism was born after a long "Dark Ages". However, I think there are only a few flickering lights that still maintain the Bible truths.5.The Ten Commandments - The commandments in the Bible are mostly seen as non-binding and irrelevant in today's world. Atheists reject any commandments while many Christians only accept a limited number of God's laws. 6.Defending My Faith - This covers a range of issues mostly asked by people outside Christianity. Topics such as "Does truth exist?" and "Where did God come from?" are some of the basic questions against God's existence. As the defense of faith covers a wide range of questions, this book will present this topic into two parts.7.Life and Miracles of Jesus - This topic will also cover the birth of Jesus, His life and ministry, and miracles that changed the world. This topic is also presented in two parts to cover as many of Jesus's interactions with mankind.8.Parables of Life - The greatest teachings of Jesus were recorded as simple parables. These are deep divine wisdom clothed as simple stories in which you and I can easily understand.9.Death and Resurrection of Jesus - Jesus died of a horrible death for humanity's sin. He could have chosen a quick death but instead, bear the brunt of sin in all its weight. The Good news is He was resurrected after three days in the grave.10.Return of the King - Jesus said He will return in glory, unlike His first advent where He chose to come as an infant in a manger born in poverty and die as a common criminal. How will Jesus return and why is it relevant to how I live my life today? It is my prayer that as you go through each one of these issues that you will be blessed and prompted to learn more. I divided this book into 10 major themes further subdivided into 365 issues. You can read it by approaching it per theme or you can choose to read one issue each day for one whole year. This book can be treated as supplementary material to help you build a reasonable faith with God. It is not my intention to present a detailed and highly scientific or philosophical explanation for each topic but at least to put a "small stone in your shoes" so the reader will not stay comfortable with "the preacher says so" attitude and be prompted to search and study more.

Christians declare their ultimate hope in two words: eternal life. What is eternal life? How does hope in eternal life relate to the challenges we face? Does hope for eternal life devalue our world or distract us from responsibility for the world we shape? And why hope, precisely? What is hoping? Why do we hope in God? An intellectually honest Christian does not ponder these questions out of idle curiosity. Without hope in eternal life our future is, ultimately, only death, and death puts into question the meaning of life, of whom we are now and what we are about in our history. In giving an account of their hope, Christians proclaim the Gospel anew and let their light shine for others.

For anyone who feels caught in the tension between the beauty of God's story and the ugliness of human hypocrisy, Why I Still Believe offers a stirring story of hope. Why would anyone be a Christian when there is so much hypocrisy in the church? Mary Jo Sharp shares her journey as a skeptical believer who still holds to a beautiful faith despite wounding experiences in the Christian community. At a time when de-conversion stories have become all too common, this is an earnest response - the compelling conversion of an unlikely believer whose questions ultimately led her to irresistible hope. Sharp addresses her own struggle with the reality that God's people repeatedly give God's story a bad name and takes a careful look at how the current church often inadvertently produces atheists despite its life-giving message. For those who feel the ever-present tension between the beauty of salvation and the dark side of human nature, Why I Still Believe is a candid and approachable case for believing in God when you really want to walk away. With fresh and thoughtful insights, this spiritual narrative presents relevant answers to haunting questions like: Isn't there too much pain and suffering to believe? Is it okay to have doubt? What if Jesus' story is a copy of another story? Is there any evidence for Jesus' resurrection? Does atheism explain the human experience better than Christianity can? How can the truth of Christianity matter when the behaviors of Christians are reprehensible? At once logical and loving, Sharp reframes the gospel as it truly is: the good news of redemption. With firmly grounded truths, Why I Still Believe is an affirming reminder that the hypocrisy of Christians can never negate the transforming grace and truth of Christ.
