Negli anni Trenta, su La Civiltà Cattolica furono pubblicati alcuni articoli sul tema dell’islam. Fu lo stesso Papa Pio XI a commissionarli, convinto che fosse necessario studiare a fondo la lingua, la religione, i costumi, il modo di pensare dei musulmani. La redazione di questi articoli fu affidata a un gesuita missionario in Albania, il quale aveva non solamente una solida competenza in materia, ma conosceva anche direttamente il mondo e la cultura islamica: era padre Giovanni Fausti, convinto sostenitore di un «Vangelo dialogante», inserito nella fede e nella cultura del popolo. Le intuizioni sul dialogo tra islam e cristianesimo, teorizzate da questo uomo di frontiera, possono essere un terreno privilegiato per cementare il dialogo interreligioso, anche oggi, specialmente alla luce del pontificato di Papa Francesco. Certa mente gli articoli che adesso ripubblichiamo (preceduti e illustrati da un saggio di padre Giovanni Sale) fanno parte di un capitale di sapienza che può aiutarci a vivere meglio il momento presente con tutte le sue tensioni e le sue sfide (dalla Prefazione di Antonio Spadaro).
