Sous l'effet des schémas réducteurs et des clichés, l'Islam fascine, inquiète, suscite la controverse et les interrogations, nourrit les fantasmes et laisse rarement indifférent. Parmi ces questions, on peut retenir celles-ci : comment se présente la diplomatie engendrée par l'Islam ? Quelle est l'application qui en a été faite ? A-t-on constaté des écarts importants entre le modèle et la copie ? Quels sont les facteurs qui ont joué un rôle fondamental dans le recul de la diplomatie musulmane ? A-t-elle fini par céder la place à celle en vigueur dans le monde occidental ? Quels sont les effets de l'alignement du monde musulman sur l'Occident en matière diplomatique ? Le déficit de sens, la montée de la demande de repères et l'absence d'" horizon d'attentes " enregistrés dans les pays musulmans entretiennent-ils des relations étroites avec cet alignement ? En d'autres termes, est-ce là où gît, en grande partie, le nœud de la crise que traverse la " Oumma " islamique aujourd'hui ? Répondre à ces interrogations ne manquera pas d'aider à démêler l'écheveau tissé autour de la diplomatie en terre d'Islam, à faire connaître ses facettes obscurcies par l'ignorance qui enveloppe généralement les problèmes ayant partie liée avec la religion musulmane, ou encore le dénigrement de cette dernière, dénigrement devenu particulièrement sensible avec les nouvelles turbulences mondiales.

Secular Power Europe and Islam argues that secularism is not the central principle of international relations but should be considered as one belief system that influences international politics. First colonized and now living under political oppression, experiencing marginalization, and feeling dejection and humiliation, many Muslim men in and outside Muslim countries have no opportunities to prove themselves as "honorable" or practice "masculinity" in culturally prescribed ways. Troubled and troublesome, many turn to militant jihadist networks to achieve self-actualization and heroism. Terrorist networks, acting as surrogates to national liberation and antiauthoritarian movements, further complicate these dynamics. Maleeha Aslam argues that gender is a fundamental battleground on which al Qaeda, the Taliban, and their types must be defeated. Issues of regressive radicalism, literalism, militancy, and terrorism can only be solved through people-centered interventions. Therefore, governments and civil society should promote an alternative culture of growth, self-expression, and actualization for Muslim men. To achieve sustainable counterterrorism results, Aslam recommends emphasizing masculine behaviour within the context of Muslim tradition and expanding the scope of required interventions beyond those confined to Islam. The book also includes empirical data from a pilot study conducted on Pakistani Muslim masculinities.

« Monsieur Hamidullah est notre maître et notre guide dans la recherche et l'étude des manuscrits sur les débuts de l'Islam », écrivait Louis Massignon dans la recommandation du recrutement au CNRS de son ancien étudiant. Cette appréciation était justifiée par la « coopération entre camarades de travail intellectuel », commencé en 1932. La grande érudition de Hamidullah (1908-2002) et ses capacités de recherche furent confirmées par la publication, après son retour à Hyderabad, de Muslim Conduct of State, ainsi que de nombreux articles de revues spécialisées, et les premières éditions des manuscrits ramenés d'Europe et qu'on croyait perdus à jamais. La thèse soutenue en 1935 à Paris sur « les Documents de la Diplomatie musulmane à l'époque du Prophète et des Khalifes orthodoxes » a été traduite en arabe et rééditée avec de nouvelles pièces découvertes par la suite. Cette thèse garde une valeur exemplaire et sa réédition désigne Hamidullah comme modèle à suivre pour les jeunes musulmans préoccupés par les déficits éducatifs de l'Islam en France, et désireux d'y remédier.
