Islamic thought is the most beautiful result of a multicultural dialogue. Islamic culture became a bridge between antiquity, Iranian scholars, Syriac and Arabic Christians and the Latin Middle Ages. Its richness of ideas, its plurality of values can contribute to the requirements of modern plurality. The monograph aims at a historical and bibliographical survey of the qurʾānic and rational world-view of early Islam, of the period of translations from Greek into Syriac and Arabic, and of the impact of Islamic thought on the Latin Middle Ages. Critical reflexions of Muslim scholars stimulated new scientific ideas and make us aware of the contribution of Islam to humanity.

This paper not only addresses the intellectual crisis in the Muslim world as manifested in the present state of Muslim thought, knowledge, education, and civilization- a crisis which is directly responsible for the Muslim world's social, economic, and political problems- but it also presents compelling and thought-provoking ideas for an alternative cultural strategy likely to alleviate the Ummah's malaise and benefit humanity at large. Dr. Al-Alwani argues that the proposed cultural strategy has never been so urgent and imperative and must establish the Islamic world view with rational educational policies on the basis of firm principles and as far-sighted strategy with the aim of dispelling the religious/secular disparity in education while keeping constantly in touch with our time.

Islamic intellectual thought is at the center of this collection of articles honoring Dimitri Gutas by friends, colleagues, and former students. The essays cover three main areas: the classical heritage and Islamic culture; classical Arabic science and philosophy; and Muslim traditional sciences. They show the interconnectedness between the Islamic intellectual tradition and its historical predecessors of Greek and Persian provenance, ranging from poetry to science and philosophy. Yet, at the same time, the authors demonstrate the independence of Muslim scholarship and the rich inner-Muslim debates that brought forth a flourishing scholastic culture in the sciences, philosophy, literature, and religious sciences. This collection also reflects the breadth of contemporary research on the intellectual traditions of Islamic civilization. Contributors include: Amos Bertolacci, Kevin van Bladel, Gideon Bohak, Sonja Brentjes, Charles Burnett, Hans Daiber, Gerhard Endress, William Fortenbaugh, Beatrice Gruendler, Jules Janssens, David King, Yahya Michot, Suleiman Mourad, Racha Omari, Felicitas Opwis, David Reisman, Heinrich von Staden, Tony Street, Hidemi Takahashi, Alexander Treiger, and Robert Wisnovsky.

This volume, the first of six to be published, studies fundamental values of Islam, along with the nature of rights and the responsibilities in a general context. The authors analyse the development of social thought and morality in Islam, and ways in which they are enforced through the family and education. Particular attention is paid to the status of women, children, youth and the socially excluded. Several chapters broach specially Islamic approaches to economics, government and justice. A world religion since its inception in the seventh century A.D., Islam is today seeking vigorous answers to contemporary problems through its multi-faceted history. Issues of poverty and wealth, inequality and demands for political expression, and respect for diversity in a difficult world of conformity are dealt with in this series. The study is organized along thematic rather than chronological lines and thus it is not necessary to read the volumes in order. Volume II is in fact the first to have been published. Volume IV is forthcoming end 2002, volume V mid 2003 and volumes III and VI in 2004. Islamic Thought in the Rise and Supremacy of Islamic Technological Culture: Water Resources and Energy, brings out the role of Islamic ideological culture in the birth, rise, and world supremacy of Islamic technological culture during the First to Eighth AH (Seventh to Fourteenth AD) centuries. Examples are given from the history of water resources and energy. Islamic ideology refers to implications for the two cultures of the Quranic concept of God and prophethood; the Kitab al-Kharaj books on the Traditions of Prophet Muhammad; Islamic law, esp. land tenure and environmental laws; economics; politics and administration; etc. The primary beneficiaries of these Islamic cultures during the early centuries, when Muslims were a minority in the Islamic world-states, were the non-Muslim majorities; the latter, therefore, embraced Islam first gradually and later on rapidly. The book presents the way to revive the Islamic ideological and technological cultures through a critique of the two main causes for the decline and continued backwardness of Muslim cultures: Sufism; and takhsis, i.e., reduction, limitation, restriction of Islamic law to only family laws; Islam to rituals and superficial aspects of the five pillars ; exclusion of Islamic science, technology, economics, etc. from Islamic epistemology and education; and other manifestations of takhsis.
