Christine Johnson faces the impending disaster of Hurricane Ivan alone in her apartment as her friends are all off island, including Mac.Mac is her friend and mentor whose identity remains ambiguous throughout the story. In the beginning he is missing and believed to be dead, only to make a sudden appearance. To some he is the returned Christ, to others, a wise man, and to his cousin, a threat. The action continues through the devastation of the hurricane and the troubled aftermath. Christine struggles to return order to her disrupted life with the help of Mac's provocative message and example.Island Adrift highlights the forces of chaos and unity--Ivan provides the chaos while Mac represents unity. This is a timely and important message--a book about being human rather than religious. When Commander Baath takes his French guests, with his crew of four, on a dive trip off Sir Hugh Rose Island, 20 nautical miles from Port Blair, it turns out to be the wrong day for a sea adventure. The calm sea, an endless liquid mirror before they dived, turns rough when they surface in an hour, as a violent storm looms over them. What was supposed to be a day trip turns into an endless drifting in the Andaman Sea thick with pirates, without a sense of direction or sight of land. Adrift follows their terrifying ordeal, battling hunger and thirst, and most of all their sanity, as they encounter the primal face of nature. Based on a real incident, Adrift is a gripping tale of survival, perseverance and fortitude.

It was the 9th of March, 1860, and eleven o’clock at night. The sea and sky were as one, and the eye could pierce but a few fathoms into the gloom. Through the raging sea, over which the waves broke with a livid light, a little ship was driving under almost bare poles. She was a schooner of a hundred tons. Her name was the Sleuth, but you would have sought it in vain on her stern, for an accident of some sort had torn it away. In this latitude, at the beginning of March, the nights are short. The day would dawn about five o’clock. But would the dangers that threatened the schooner grow less when the sun illumined the sky? Was not the frail vessel at the mercy of the waves? Undoubtedly; and only the calming of the billows and the lulling of the gale could save her from that most awful of shipwrecks — foundering in the open sea far from any coast on which the survivors might find safety. In the stern of the schooner were three boys, one about fourteen, the two others about thirteen years of age; these, with a young negro some twelve years old, were at the wheel, and with their united strength strove to check the lurches which threatened every instant to throw the vessel broadside on. It was a difficult task, for the wheel seemed as though it would turn in spite of all they could do, and hurl them against the bulwarks. Just before midnight such a wave came thundering against the stern that it was a wonder the rudder was not unshipped. The boys were thrown backwards by the shock, but they recovered themselves almost immediately. “Does she still steer?” asked one of them. “Yes, Gordon,” answered Briant, who had coolly resumed his place. “Hold on tight, Donagan,” he continued, “and don’t be afraid. There are others besides ourselves to look after. You are not hurt Moko?” “No, Massa Briant,” answered the boy. “But we must keep the yacht before the wind, or we shall be pooped.” At this moment the door of the companion leading to the saloon was thrown open. Two little heads appeared above the level of the deck, and with them came up the genial face of a dog, who saluted with a loud, “Whough! whough!” “Briant! Briant!” shouted one of the youngsters “What is the matter?”

Seafaring before the twentieth century bristled with peril. The safe haven of your vessel might be destroyed by tempest or misadventure, your security scuttled. When you were cast away with only the resources of pluck, stamina, hope – and luck. Where you might end up on the expanse of endless sea facing the prospect of imminent dehydrated, starving death. Or on a safe but potentially forbidding – yet occasionally lush – outcrop of an isolated shore, amongst which perils abounded accounts of courage and companionship. These are narratives of castaways abandoned to fend for themselves, and the ordeals they endured and survived and in remembrance of the seafarers who did not.

Sable Island written by Marq de Villiers and has been published by Bloomsbury Publishing USA this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2009-05-26 with Nature categories.

The story of a small but deadly sand dune in the middle of the North Atlantic Sable Island-one hundred miles due east of Nova Scotia, in the midst of the worst weather in the North Atlantic-is a thirty mile-long sand dune, uninhabited except by a couple of government agents who maintain an outpost and by bands of wild horses that have populated the island for more than two hundred years. Yet this small place illuminates grand and global themes, both human and natural. There is evidence that Sable may have been discovered as early as the fifteenth century, and it has been the subject of several failed colonization efforts by Portugal, France, the Basques, and even a group of prominent Bostonians, including the uncle of John Hancock. For centuries before lifesaving global positioning technology, Sable terrorized legions of mariners crossing from Europe to America-more than five hundred ships have been wrecked on its shores, fully ten disasters for every mile of coastline. Sable is constantly moving, its beaches disappearing and reappearing in storms, its very body in slow motion to the east. Because of this, it is a metaphor for the way the planet governs itself, because to appreciate Sable is to understand the workings of the great ocean currents, the winds and the North Atlantic gale, and the forces of entropy. Impressive in the array of its knowledge, Sable Island is a lyrical ode to one of nature's wonders.
