A little more than 200 years into the future, humanity begins the process of colonization beyond Earth. It is a new era of great exploration; massive advantages in technology allow the creation of spacecraft so advanced that it seems you become a living part of the machine. The future of the people traveling in this new spacecraft is bright. Their goals, their dream of a greater humanity bringing life beyond Earth, are high. New technology allows people to reach out and grasp what was previously impossible. Aging and disease are things of the past. Governments have long ago dealt with issues of war and pollution on Earth. Our world is now a safer, cleaner, healthier place, and as these achievements were reached, humanity needed to set new goals. It is time for some of us to leave and bring Earth's life to new planets beckoning us to help them come to life. The great new ship, the Evolution Fulfillment, is as big as a small city. The tragic failures of the past are behind us; this time is going to be different. This ship will hold more than 400 people, primarily scientists and engineers, all going on this one-way journey that will now take only a little less than a quarter of a century.Islands in the Void opens with the Evolution Fulfillment approaching its 22nd year of this journey. It is on this peaceful and successful island of humanity, far from anyone, deep in the vastness of space, where they must come to terms with an unsettling reality: They are not alone, they are not safe, they are not armed, and they are not fast enough to get away. A problem is coming to them, and they cannot escape. Now they must intelligently use the technological resources of this unique spacecraft in order to survive.

As Earth's faster-than-light spaceship hung in the void between galaxies, Arcot, Wade, Morey and Fuller could see below them, like a vast shining horizon, the mass of stars that formed their own island universe. Morey worked a moment with his slide rule, then said, "We made good time! Twenty-nine light years in ten seconds! Yet you had it on at only half power...." Arcot pushed the control lever all the way to full power. The ship filled with the strain of flowing energy, and sparks snapped in the air of the control room as they raced at an inconceivable speed through the darkness of intergalactic space. But suddenly, far off to their left and far to their right, they saw two shining ships paralleling their course! They held grimly to the course of the Earth ship, bracketing it like an official guard. The Earth scientists stared at them in wonder. "Lord," muttered Morey, "where can they have come from?"

In recent years, Brazil has discovered vast quantities of petroleum deep within its territorial waters, inciting the construction of a series of cities along its coast and in the ocean. We could term these developments as Petropolises, or cities formed from resource extraction. The Petropolis of Tomorrow is a design and research project, originally undertaken at Rice University that examines the relationship between resource extraction and urban development in order to extract new templates for sustainable urbanism. Organized into three sections: Archipelago Urbanism, Harvesting Urbanism, and Logistical Urbanism, which consist of theoretical, technical, and photo articles as well as design proposals, The Petropolis of Tomorrow elucidates not only a vision for water-based urbanism of the floating frontier city, it also speculates on new methodologies for integrating infrastructure, landscape, urbanism and architecture within the larger spheres of economics, politics, and culture that implicate these disciplines. Contributions: Oriol Bohigas, Arnold Reijdorp and Casanova+Hernandez

Islands, some of Grenier's most lovingly written and personal philosophical speculations, was first published in an edition of five essays in 1933. The revised edition, with six essays, was published with a preface by Albert Camus in 1948; the third edition, upon which this translation is based, was published in 1959. Grenier's memoir of his cat Mouloud is also an essay on the nature of death; a series of childhood memories becomes the basis for an essay on his attraction to the void. Everything is connected, as one idea leads to an- other, from author to reader to society at large.

islands has emotional content far beyond any material significance because giving way on the island issue to Japan would be considered as once again compromising the sovereignty over the whole Korean peninsula. For Japan, the Dokdo issue may lack the same degree of strategic and economic values and emotional appeal as the other two territorial disputes that Japan has had with Russia and the two Chinas – namely the Northern Territories/Southern Kurile Islands and the Senkaku Islands, respectively. Nevertheless, fishing resources and the maritime boundary issues became highly salient with the introduction of UNCLOS. Also, the legal, political, and economic issues surrounding Dokdo are all intertwined with Japan’s other territorial disputes to the extent that concessions of sovereignty on any of these island disputes could jeopardize claims or negotiations concerning the rest. South Korea and Japan have forged a deeper diplomatic and economic partn- ship over the past decade. A new spirit of partnership after the landmark joint declaration of 1998 culminated in the successful co-hosting of the World Cup 2002. At the end of 2003 the two neighbors began to negotiate an FTA to further strengthen their already close economic ties. South Korea’s decades-long embargo on Japanese cultural products has now been lifted, while a number of South Korean pop stars are currently sweeping across Japan, creating the so-called “Korean Wave” fever. A pragmatic calculation of national interests would thus suggest cooperative behavior.
