The problem of selecting populations better than a control with respect to a location parameter under ordering prior has been considered. In this paper we consider the case of binomial populations (important for discrete data) for which the parameters of interest are not the location parameters as was the case studied in 4. We consider both cases when the parameter of control is known and unknown. For the case of known control, we propose an isotonic procedure which is given. The results in this section deal with both cases, namely, the sample sizes all equal, and unequal. Some recursive relations are derived for computing the constants required for the proposed procedure. When the control is unknown, a conditional isotonic procedure is proposed. This procedure provides a conservative solution for the unconditional procedure. Brief tables of associated constants for the proposed procedures are given.

If the negative exponential distribution is the model for lifetime, then the problem is to select all those populations for which the guarantee lifetimes are larger than that of a standard. Comparisons of these procedures based on the expected number of bad populations in the selected subset is investigated. Tables of associated constants for the proposed procedures are given. (Author).

Selection and ranking (ordering) problems in statistical inference arise mainly because the classical tests of homogeneity are often inadequate in certain situations where the experimenter is interested in comparing k (> or = 2) populations, treatments or processes with the goal of selecting one or more worth-while (good) population. Chapter I of this thesis considers the problem of selecting a subset containing all populations that are better than a control under the assumptions of an ordering prior. Here, by an ordering prior we mean that there exists a known simple or partial order relationship among the unknown parameters of the treatments (excluding the control). Three new selection procedures are proposed and studied. These procedures do meet the usual requirement that the probability of a correct selection is greater than or equal to a pre-determined number P*. Two of the three procedures use the isotonic regression over the sample means of the k treatments with respect to the given ordering prior. Tables which are necessary to carry out the selection procedure with isotonic approach for the selection of unknown means of normal populations and gamma populations are given. Monte Carlo comparisons on the performance of several procedures for the normal or gamma means problem were carried out in several selected cases. The results of this study seem to indicate that the procedures based on isotonic estimators always have superior prformance, especially, when there are more than one bad population (in comparison with the control).

The problem of selecting truncated exponential populations better than a control under an ordering prior is studied. Based on some prior information, it is reasonable to set lower bounds for the concerned parameters. Through this consideration, and isotonic selection rule is proposed. This selection rule always satisfies the requirement that the probability of a correct selection is at least equal to some prespecified value p:. A criterion is proposed to evaluate the performance of the selection rules. Simulation results indicate that this rule always performs better than some other earlier existing isotonic selection rules. (Author).

Shanti S. Gupta has made pioneering contributions to ranking and selection theory; in particular, to subset selection theory. His list of publications and the numerous citations his publications have received over the last forty years will amply testify to this fact. Besides ranking and selection, his interests include order statistics and reliability theory. The first editor's association with Shanti Gupta goes back to 1965 when he came to Purdue to do his Ph.D. He has the good fortune of being a student, a colleague and a long-standing collaborator of Shanti Gupta. The second editor's association with Shanti Gupta began in 1978 when he started his research in the area of order statistics. During the past twenty years, he has collaborated with Shanti Gupta on several publications. We both feel that our lives have been enriched by our association with him. He has indeed been a friend, philosopher and guide to us.
