This seventh and final volume explores the life of the Civil War congressman, secretary of state, and the American minister to France, Elihu Washburnefrom his retirement from public office to his death in 1887. During this final chapter in his life, Elihu Washburne was a presidential candidate for the Republican nomination in 1880, receiving over forty delegate votes in a losing cause to General James Garfield, who later became president. At that same Republican convention, Washburne came in second place in the balloting for vice president. In the contest for the number-two spot, Elihu Washburne lost to Chester Arthur, who replaced Garfield as the president after that chief executive was assassinated in 1881.

In 1869, President Grant nominated his old friend Elihu Washburne as secretary of state and then as minister to France. Washburne presented his credentials to Napoleon III and was present in 1870 for the Franco-German War. Following the war with the Germans, the people of Paris rose up in revolt and proclaimed a leftist commune. The poor response of the French government to feed the people of Paris after the peace treaty contributed to the political turmoil. This sixth volume explores the life of the American minister to France, Elihu Washburne, during the years following the Franco-German War and Paris Commune as the French government and people tried to rebuild their country following those dramatic events.

Vicksburg is the key. . . . Let us get Vicksburg, and all that country is ours.--President Abraham Lincoln, 1862 In a brilliantly constructed and powerfully rendered new account, James R. Arnold offers a penetrating analysis of Grant's strategies and actions leading to the Union victory at Vicksburg. Approaching these epic events from a unique and well-rounded perspective, and based on careful research, Grant Wins the War is fascinating reading for all Civil War and military history buffs. Acclaim for Grant Wins the War Nicely details the coordination of Union military and naval operations and the boldness and genius of General U. S. Grant that brought Union victory, and he offers an excellent discussion of the technology and tactics of siege warfare. . . . a good drums-and-bugle account of an important event.--Library Journal A particular strength of this work is its demonstration that modern weapons left no shortcuts to victory, and little room for command virtuosity.--Publishers Weekly Throughout, Arnold backs up his assessments with solid facts and sound reasoning, engagingly presented. He has produced a useful and enjoyable brief history of the Vicksburg campaign, helpful to scholars and general readers alike.--Journal of Military History Powerfully and persuasively argues that the Union victory at Vicksburg in 1863 was in fact the actual turning point of the Civil War.--Helena (Mont.) Freedom Union And Power written by Michael S. Green and has been published by Fordham Univ Press this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2004 with Biography & Autobiography categories.

Freedom, Union, and Power analyzes the beliefs of the Republican Party during the Civil War, how those beliefs changed, and what those changes foreshadowed for the future. The party's pre-war ideology of free soil, free labor, free men changed with the Republican ascent to power in the White House. With Lincoln's election, Republicans faced something new-responsibility for the government. With responsibility came the need to wage a war for the survival of that government, the country, and the party. And with victory in the war came responsibility responsibility for saving the Union-by ending slavery-and for pursuing policies that fit into their belief in a strong, free Union. Michael Green shows how Republicans had to wield federal power to stop a rebellion against freedom and union. Crucial to their use of federal power was their hope of keeping that power-the intersection of policy and politics.
