Issachar Bates (1758-1837) was a Revolutionary War veteran in rural upstate New York who, at the age of forty-three, abruptly turned from his family life to become a celibate Shaker. He immediately became instrumental in Shakerism's westward expansion, and his personal charisma, persuasive preaching, and musical talent helped stimulate the movement's growth. Bates drew "western" converts in abundance, profoundly changing the character of Shakerism by increasing its geographic reach. He also helped shape the Shakers' unique theology and hymnody through his many influential texts and songs.

The debate over women preachers has raged for centuries, but the argument has not beenand probably will not beresolved. This book is not an addendum to that dispute. It is, however, an attempt to show some of the difficulties lady ministers have overcome to answer Gods call to proclaim His Word. The International Pentecostal Holiness Church, from its inception, has recognized women by admitting them to pulpits and allowing them to pastor churches. Lady ministers have also served successfully as evangelists and missionaries. However, the leadership of the denomination at a Solemn Assembly in 1996 acknowledged that the church had withheld from women places of honor and desired to release them to serve in leadership roles. Historically, women have gained ground only to lose it again, and even in our twenty-first century society, some still refuse to let Gods handmaids speak.

Examining the lives of notable women, this study of biblical stories teaches the significance of the Black women who brought civilization into existence. Many stories in the Bible are about men. Most studies do not take a female perspective on the exploration of the lived experiences of the women of the Bible. Truthful Reaching Back...Moving Forward does just that, focusing on those stories that depict ordinary women doing extraordinary things that were noteworthy. It allows the opportunity for reflection as we move forward and embrace what these women did to change and contribute to history. With guidance from the Holy Spirit, we can gain an understanding of who these women were, how they lived, and what they endured. This collection serves as a manifestation of victory for all women of color. We must look back to the places, memories, hurts, victories, and fears that history has shown us if we are to move forward positively and embrace who we are with purpose and intention.

THE STRANGE FILES is equal parts sizzling satire and thrilling dystopian epic containing the complete Strange Trilogy, the prequel story The Fall, exclusive bonus material and the story of Felix Strange's first case, The Promised Land. The First Stone (Strange Trilogy 1): Private eye Felix Strange doesn't work homicide cases - he saw enough dead bodies fighting in the Great Patriotic Crusade against Iran, a war that left him with a crippling disease with no name and no cure. Strange collars cheating husbands and insurance fraudsters, scraping together just enough to pay for the black-market medicine that he needs to stay alive. So when he is summoned to a Manhattan hotel room to investigate the murder of America's best-loved preacher, he'd rather not get involved. But powerful people have hired Strange for a reason . . . The Rapture (Strange Trilogy 2): Isaac Taylor isn't missing. According to government records, he never existed. PI Felix Strange isn't convinced, not least because Isaac is an old army buddy. The man saved his life in Tehran, so the least Strange can do is dig up some leads. Strange soon discovers Isaac isn't the only one missing. All over the country, young and old, men and women, the good and the trying-to-be, are disappearing - quite literally without a trace. If Strange doesn't figure out what's happening fast, someone close to him will fall into a patch of thin air. The Children's Crusade (Strange Trilogy 3): PI Felix Strange is working his last case. The woman he loves has been taken by Fisher Partners - America's for-profit secret police - and, though he suspects he won't find her, he's going to do the next best thing: kill everyone involved. As he works his way down the list, Strange is offered a secret deal, which could lead him straight to Iris. To free her, all he has to do is assassinate someone who claims to be the new messiah. The problem? He's twelve years old. Praise for Elliott Hall 'Strange's sardonic wit makes him the perfect guide to his troublingly familiar landscape' - Guardian 'Ingenious and witty' - Daily Telegraph 'Outstanding' - Independent 'Wonderful' - The Times 'An ingenious twist . . . Hall's novel combines pacy storytelling with a disturbing dystopian vision' - Mail on Sunday
