Nach dem Ersten Weltkrieg schlossen die alliierten Wissenschaftler die deutschen und österreichischen Wissenschaftler und mit ihnen die deutsche Sprache von internationalen wissenschaftlichen Vereinigungen, Kongressen und Publikationen aus, mit denen sie die Wissenschaften neu organisierten. Besonders betroffen waren die Akademien der Wissenschaften und Disziplinen, in denen die deutschen Wissenschaftler und die deutsche Sprache führend gewesen waren: Astronomie, Geodäsie, Geophysik, Geographie, Mathematik, Chemie und Medizin. Der Boykott wurde damit begründet, dass die deutschen Wissenschaftler die Kriegsschuld und die Kriegsverbrechen Deutschlands geleugnet und den deutschen Militarismus verherrlicht hatten. Diesen Wissenschafts- und Sprachboykott untersucht die vorliegende Studie anhand von umfangreichem Quellenmaterial. Beschrieben werden die Vorgeschichte, die Motive und Instrumente des Boykotts, die Gegenaktionen und Verhandlungen über die Wiederaufnahme der internationalen Zusammenarbeit und die Neuorganisation nach dem Zweiten Weltkrieg, die sich auf die 1919/20 geschaffenen internationalen Wissenschaftsverbände und Sprachenregelungen stützte. Der Boykott führte langfristig zum Rückgang des Deutschen als internationale Wissenschaftssprache. Die überarbeitete, aktualisierte und erweiterte Neuauflage enthält u.a. ein neu verfasstes Kapitel zur Situation des Deutschen als Wissenschaftssprache nach dem Zweiten Weltkrieg sowie einen neuen Anhang mit zentralen Quelldokumenten.
