"Love drives and gives life to the commerce of mankind." Thus, the sixteen year old Ferdinando Galiani (1728-1787) presented his project to understand the sociable nature of man. This observation, a reflection of his own position on the relation between trade and virtue, hinted at what the mature works of Galiani, one of the most noteworthy economists and wits in eighteenth-century Italy, would eventually yield. In Love, Self-Deceit, and Money, Koen Stapelbroek reconstructs the Early Neapolitan Enlightenment debate on the morality of market societies, a debate that hinged on the preservation of Naples' independent statehood in a global arena of commercial and military competition. Galiani rejected the moralizing and mercantile ideas of his contemporaries regarding the dangers threatening Naples, and, in his Della moneta (1751), he justified the systems set in place by the Neapolitan government. With reference to early, previously unstudied lectures on self-deceptive 'Platonic love,' Koen Stapelbroek examines Galiani's role in the wider debate, arguing that his early moral philosophical and historical work suggests a great deal about his political-economic stance, including his assertion that money is the ultimate ordering principle in the universe. As a study of one of the most idiosyncratic minds of the Enlightenment period, Love, Self-Deceit, and Money shows how diverse ideas of the development of individual passions into social dispositions, commerce, and reform politics dovetailed seamlessly in the intellectual climate of eighteenth-century Europe.

In Naples and Napoleon John Davis takes the southern Italian Kingdom of the Two Sicilies as the vantage point for a sweeping reconsideration of Italy's history in the age of Napoleon and the European revolutions. The book's central themes are posed by the period of French rule from 1806 to 1815, when southern Italy was the Mediterranean frontier of Napoleon's continental empire. The tensions between Naples and Paris made this an important chapter in the history of that empire and revealed the deeper contradictions on which it was founded. But the brief interlude of Napoleonic rule later came to be seen as the critical moment when a modernizing North finally parted company from a backward South. Although these arguments still shape the ways in which Italian history is written, in most parts of the North political and economic change before Unification was slow and gradual; whereas in the South it came sooner and in more disruptive forms. Davis develops a wide-ranging critical reassessment of the dynamics of political change in the century before Unification. His starting point is the crisis that overwhelmed the Italian states at the end of the 18th century, when Italian rulers saw the political and economic fabric of the Ancien Régime undermined throughout Europe. In the South the crisis was especially far reaching and this, Davis argues, was the reason why in the following decade the South became the theatre for one of the most ambitious reform projects in Napoleonic Europe. The transition was precarious and insecure, but also mobilized political projects and forms of collective action that had no counterparts elsewhere in Italy before 1848, illustrating the similar nature of the political challenges facing all the pre-Unification states. Although Unification finally brought Italy's insecure dynastic principalities to an end, it offered no remedies to the insecurities that from much earlier had made the South especially vulnerable to the challenges of the new age: which was why the South would become a problem - Italy's 'Southern Problem'.

Nell'ambiguità di un gioco di parole che include le opposte condizioni dell'attendere un evento e del suo inaspettato accadere, si è individuato il titolo di questo volume che supporta la raccolta di opere d'arte del Patrimonio dell'Accademia di Belle Arti di Catanzaro. Una raccolta che, sebbene comprenda anche donazioni acquisite in passato, che quindi riportano molto indietro nel tempo, solo recentemente ha assunto una cospicuità e una rilevanza inattesa. E ciò è potuto accadere grazie alla generosità di tanti artisti che, nella maggior parte dei casi, hanno operato nell'istituzione catanzarese in veste di docenti, o che, più semplicemente, sono stati vicini ad essa, talvolta con la partecipazione a conferenze, dibattiti, mostre e altre attività extradidattiche. È questo un volume, quindi, che in qualche misura restituisce e ricostruisce la storia dell'Accademia d Belle Arti di Catanzaro, nell'inevitabile eterogeneità di una raccolta che rispecchia, non soltanto la molteplicità generazionale e d'orientamento espressivo dei numerosi donatori, ma anche e soprattutto la virtuosa ricchezza e varietà delle linee di ricerca e, per estensione, dei percorsi didattici e degli spunti di riflessione critica proposti agli allievi nell'arco della sua quarantennale attività. Un periodo relativamente breve nel corso del quale l'istituzione catanzarese è riuscita a ritagliarsi un ruolo di grande prestigio, elevandosi a sicuro punto di riferimento nell'ambito dell'Alta Formazione Artistica, non soltanto per la Calabria, ma per tutto il Mezzogiorno d' ltalia. Ruolo, questo, che viene ribadito di anno in anno dalla rilevanza e dal numero delle iniziative culturali prodotte e promosse, dai frequenti riconoscimenti conseguiti dagli iscritti in tanti premi e manifestazioni nazionali e internazionali e, non da ultimo, dai non meno numerosi diplomati che al termine del percorso di studi hanno potuto intraprendere il non facile cammino della professione d'artista o si sono aggiudicati con merito incarichi di docenza un po' in tutto il Paese. Che si determini attraverso un percorso di sedimentata e complessa riflessione o che scaturisca e deflagri dalla casualità istintiva di un'azione, è difficile pensare l'arte al di fuori di quel territorio ideale, necessario e pressoché inevitabile, quella sorta di a priori dell'opera, che corrisponde alla dimensione dell'in/atteso. Una dimensione che a sua volta, più in generale, sembra poter includere e riflettere con gelida imparzialità le opposte polarità che determinano approcci e percorsi esistenziali, sempre unici e irripetibili, di ogni esperienza umana. A questa raccolta che suggella e celebra il quarantennale dell'Accademia di Belle Arti di Catanzaro manca, oggi, solamente una sua sede stabile per consentire la più ampia condivisione e fruizione di un patrimonio che non vuole e non può essere soltanto appannaggio dell'Istituzione, ma di tutta la collettività. Arte, quindi, In attesa, anche, di una sua definitiva e degna collocazione.

Nella loro essenzialità i lavori di Emiliano e Luca non risultano né banali né superficiali, sono complessi e stratificati, e spesso pagano il prezzo di essere di difficile comprensione a un’analisi poco attenta. Il duo campano inventa un linguaggio originale e immediatamente riconoscibile, che, pur mantenendo come punto fermo la cartapesta, si rinnova e si evolve nel tempo adattandosi alle mutate e mutevoli esigenze della comunicazione. “Maneggiare con cura” non è solo un esplicito richiamo alla fragilità intrinseca nel materiale cartapesta, ma è soprattutto un avvertimento per il pubblico, un monito a non guardare alle opere del duo campano con superficialità, un’esortazione ad andare oltre la materia e la tecnica per riflettere sul senso più profondo dell’impasto mediatico. Dalla fragilità della cartapesta – e dalla consapevolezza di essere fragili loro stessi – Perino & Vele partono per ricostruire una realtà diversa e ancora possibile. Stesa in fogli sottili e colorati, impastata in trapunte a scacchiera o resinata per diventare immune alle intemperie del tempo, la cartapesta costruisce forme e condensa significati, dialoga con lo spettatore attraverso la spontaneità del linguaggio visivo, per comunicare un messaggio nuovo, il punto di vista degli artisti sulla società e il tempo presente. In their essentiality, the works of Emiliano and Luca are neither banal nor superficial, and often they pay the price of careless analysis making them too difficult to understand. The duo from Campania invented an original and immediately recognisable language that, though it always uses papier-mâché, it takes on new aspects and evolves over time adapting itself to the changed and changing needs of communication. “Handle with care” is not only an explicit reference to the intrinsic fragility of papier-mâché, but above all it is a warning to the public, a warning not look at the works of Campania duo superficially, an exhortation to go beyond the material and the technique to reflect on the deeper sense of this mixture of media. From the fragility of papier-mâché – and from the awareness they themselves are fragile – perino & vele set out to reconstruct a different but still possible reality. laid out in thin colourful sheets, kneaded into checkered quilts or coated in resin making them immune to the weather, the papiermâché constructs shapes and condenses meanings, dialogues with the spectator using the spontaneity of the visual language, to communicate a new message, the artists’ points of view on society and our times.
