Accessible, refreshingly candid, but above all helpful, this pragmatic guide addresses a real need by dealing with the problems that face the new IT manager. By providing a number of practical recommendations and approaches including how to make the transition from technical professional to manager and dealing with people, to giving advice and guidance on organization structure, architecture and planning approaches, this book covers a whole raft of issues essential to managing an IT unit. If you have chosen to move from the safe haven of technology to the unpredictable world of management, this book could make the difference between success and failure. "The IT Manager's Survival Guide is well named. Aimed at the techie becoming an IT Manager it covers the many alligators of IT management - from legacy systems to managing vendors - in easy chunks with checklists. It also provides the new manager with help to get ahead of the game by including articles from experts on what is wrong with IT management and a set of short reviews of management theorists from Strassman to Mayo. I recommend this book for those who would like to buck the trend - the average tenure of an IT Manager is about 900 days - and run an IT outfit appreciated by customers and staff." No IT manager or worker enjoys being woken up the middle of the night over a system fault. But arguably the worst way to be awakened is over a situation where data loss has occurred – and the recovery is going wrong. The Busy IT Manager’s Guide to Data Recovery takes a razor focus on the details IT managers (and their teams) responsible for data recovery and resiliency within their business need to be aware of in the design of robust data protection systems. This book covers key architectural requirements of a data resilient system and the types of technology a business can deploy for data protection that maximises the potential for a successful recovery. With cyber-attacks being a daily challenge for IT and business now, the book also takes an in-depth look at the special considerations companies need to take in order to guarantee the recoverability of data after a destructive cyber event. Regardless of whether your IT infrastructure runs on-premises or in the public cloud, this book gives you the information you need to plan and run a successful data recovery solution that meets your business needs. Preston de Guise has been working with data recovery products for his entire career – designing, implementing, and supporting solutions for governments, universities, and businesses ranging from SMEs to Fortune 500 companies. This broad exposure to industry verticals and business sizes has enabled Preston to understand not only the technical requirements of data protection and recovery, but the management and procedural aspects too.

Ever wondered how to carry out business planning, deal with customers, analyse business requirements, design IT systems or even manage finance and property? This handbook will provide you with systems for dealing with all of these potential problems in a logical and systematic manner. Conforming to UK National Management Standards and meeting the requirements of NVQ Management Levels 3, 4 and 5, Information Technology manager David Miller has brought together checklists aimed at anyone managing customers, projects and staff. From professionals with a good knowledge of the processes involved, to students starting out, The IT Manager's Handbook is a valuable resource accessible to non-IT organisations, colleges, businesses and other organisations. This is a fully portable, readily available and comprehensive source of reference material to help you meet the ever-increasing demands placed on today's IT Manager. The IT Manager's Handbook provides information technology managers and staff with a comprehensive and practical tool for their everyday activities as suppliers and purchasers of IT services and products. It contains over 300 checklists for carrying out business planning, dealing with customers, planning and managing projects, analysing business requirements, specifying and designing IT systems, evaluating and purchasing IT packages, managing staff, managing one's own career, carrying out administration and health and safety procedures, and managing finance and property. In addition, there are sections outlining the UK's national management standards and defining accounting and IT terms. The handbook does not replace the need to read around subjects in detail but brings summary guidelines together into one place. It is a document that is easy to read and contains in a concise form much of the detail needed to carry out the daily tasks of IT management. As with any set of checklists, problems should be thought out first and the lists used to pick up missing points. Some of the lists are in a logical sequence for carrying out tasks; others are in alphabetical order. The handbook will be of assistance to anyone involved with customers, projects and staff, not just those employed in IT and many of the guidelines apply equally to non-IT organisations. The handbook can be used by students to assist with IT and management courses and will be valuable to colleges, businesses and other organisations as a teaching aid resource, to assist with the production of training materials and as a guide for discussion workshops. The handbook incorporates my 30 years' experience as an IT manager. During this time I observed many occasions when individuals re-invented the wheel when asked to carry out a task. Sometimes this was valid when carrying out new work or reviewing existing methodology but often it was routine work such as recruitment and procedures were already established which should have been used as a basis for further improvement. Occasionally not using tried and tested methods led to disaster when some vital activity was forgotten or an incompatibility emerged. I found it better to document successful methods wherever possible without stifling the need for innovation where appropriate. In addition, written business procedures form an important element of quality service delivery. In designing the handbook consideration has been given to the UK's National Standards for Operational and Strategic Management and the requirements of NVQ Management levels 3, 4 and 5 including the management of activities, resources, people, information, projects and quality.
