Sound Intentions written by Peter McDonald and has been published by Oxford University Press this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2012-11-22 with History categories.

The rhymes in poems are important to understanding how poets write; and in the nineteenth century, rhyme conditioned the ways in which poets heard both themselves and each other writing. Sound Intentions studies the significance of rhyme in the work of Wordsworth, Keats, Tennyson, Christina Rossetti, Hopkins and other poets, including Coleridge, Byron, Elizabeth Barrett Browning, Swinburne, and Hardy. The book's stylistic reading of nineteenth-century poetry argues for Wordsworth's centrality to issues of intention and chance in poets' work, and offers a reading of the formal choices made in poetry as profoundly revealing points of intertextual relation. Sound Intentions includes detailed consideration of the critical meaning of both rhyme and repetition, bringing to bear an emphasis on form as poetry's crucial proving-ground. In a series of detailed readings of important poems, the book shows how close formal attention goes beyond critical formalism, and can become a way of illuminating poets' deepest preoccupations, doubts, and beliefs. Wordsworth's sounding of his own poetic voice, in blank verse as well as rhyme, is here taken as a model for the ways in which later nineteenth-century poets attend to the most perplexing and important voicings of their own poetic originality.

God Man And Devil written by Nahma Sandrow and has been published by Syracuse University Press this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2015-02-01 with Performing Arts categories.

An anthology of five Yiddish plays in translation—all written by well-known playwrights in the first quarter of the twentieth century—God, Man, and Devil also includes two independent scenes, which in Nahma Sandrow's words, "show off the raucous characteristic of Yiddish theater, especially in popular performance." The settings of the plays range widely—a luxurious parlor, a haunted graveyard, a farmyard, a sweatshop on strike, a subway, and the boardwalk of Atlantic City. They are both comic and mournful, and reflect expressionism, satire, fantasy, farce, suspense, and romance. But all consider the same question: what makes life morally good and worth living? Before the modern Yiddish secular culture evolved as we know it today, Yiddish plays were being written for about a century. As Yiddish-speaking communities flourished, so did their love for theater. "Yiddish playwrights shared their experiences and made them art." Edited to make them more accessible for both reading and performance, each play is accompanied by an introduction, which provides historical context, production histories, and elucidation of references.

I M Just No Good At Rhyming written by Chris Harris and has been published by Pan Macmillan this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2018-09-20 with Juvenile Nonfiction categories.

"Highly recommended. I think it will make children wriggle with delight" – Stephen Fry If I ever find myself holding a gecko . . . I'll lecko. Forget what you think you know about poetry – this is something totally different. Chris Harris' I'm Just No Good At Rhyming combines wit, wordplay and nonsense with visual and verbal tricks to make you look at the world in a new and wonderfully upside-down way, reminiscent of Spike Milligan. I'm just no good at rhyming. It makes me feel so bad. I'm just no good at rhyming, And that's why I'm so blue. This entirely unique collection of wildly witty words offers a surprise around every corner, from the ongoing rivalry between the author and illustrator (mean poem and cruel portrait included), to the mysteriously misnumbered pages that can only be deciphered by a certain code-cracking verse, to a poem that is 100% genuinely infinite. Meet a balding werewolf, competitive boulders, a birthday piranha, and find out if grown-ups really are better! Why are grown-ups better than kids? 'Cause we got what it takes – We never, ever, ever, ever, ever, make mistaeks! Adding to the fun: Lane Smith, winner of the CILIP Kate Greenaway Medal for There Is a Tribe of Kids, has spectacularly illustrated this extraordinary collection with nearly one hundred pieces of appropriately absurd art. It's a mischievous match made in heaven and the perfect gift for creative kids or immature grown-ups.
