Shock And Awe written by Simon Reynolds and has been published by Faber & Faber this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2016-10-04 with Music categories.
As the sixties dream faded, a new flamboyant movement electrified the world: GLAM! In Shock and Awe, Simon Reynolds explores this most decadent of genres on both sides of the Atlantic. Bolan, Bowie, Suzi Quatro, Alice Cooper, New York Dolls, Slade, Roxy Music, Iggy, Lou Reed, Be Bop Deluxe, David Essex -- all are represented here. Reynolds charts the retro future sounds, outrageous styles and gender-fluid sexual politics that came to define the first half of the seventies and brings it right up to date with a final chapter on glam in hip hop, Lady Gaga, and the aftershocks of David Bowie's death. Shock and Awe is a defining work and another classic in the Faber Social rock n roll canon to stand alongside Rip it Up, Electric Eden and Yeah Yeah Yeah.

After being diagnosed with terminal cancer, a professor shares the lessons he's learned—about living in the present, building a legacy, and taking full advantage of the time you have—in this life-changing classic. "We cannot change the cards we are dealt, just how we play the hand." —Randy Pausch A lot of professors give talks titled "The Last Lecture." Professors are asked to consider their demise and to ruminate on what matters most to them. And while they speak, audiences can't help but mull over the same question: What wisdom would we impart to the world if we knew it was our last chance? If we had to vanish tomorrow, what would we want as our legacy? When Randy Pausch, a computer science professor at Carnegie Mellon, was asked to give such a lecture, he didn't have to imagine it as his last, since he had recently been diagnosed with terminal cancer. But the lecture he gave—"Really Achieving Your Childhood Dreams"—wasn't about dying. It was about the importance of overcoming obstacles, of enabling the dreams of others, of seizing every moment (because "time is all you have . . . and you may find one day that you have less than you think"). It was a summation of everything Randy had come to believe. It was about living. In this book, Randy Pausch has combined the humor, inspiration and intelligence that made his lecture such a phenomenon and given it an indelible form. It is a book that will be shared for generations to come.

A Journey To Hell and Back is a gripping saga of a young woman's journey from adolescence to adulthood at an accelerated pace. This book is an exploration of a troubled teen's journey into the underworld to emerge as an independent, confident, and self-assured woman. Pitfalls, tragedy, and trials that lure a young honor student into the mean streets of Atlanta and finally, New York mark the story. Her journey to hell led her through a fiery furnace that burned 70 % of her body with 2nd and 3rd degree burns, and an over three months hospital stay where God provided personal consolation and healing. After God miraculously saved her from a life in the streets heaped with sin, her zeal for God resulted in her making additional mistakes, including renewing the abusive relationship that had almost cost her life. The story is a modern day version of Dante's Inferno. Each layer of Hell corresponds with a new low in the protagonist's life. Finally, from within the very bowels of Hell, she cries out to the Lord for salvation. This spiritual epiphany becomes a turning point in her life, thrusting her forward from Hell. The tremendous suffering and miraculous ending of this book will offer hope and comfort for anyone suffering from loneliness, heartache, or disappointment. It provides a realistic and human perspective on many social topics such as teenage rebellion and pregnancy, domestic violence, divorce, AIDS, substance abuse, prostitution, and the legal system. It is a necessity for anyone who has been a part or will work with any of these populations.

Little Men recounts six months in the life of the students at Plumfield, a school run by Professor Friedrich and Mrs. Josephine Bhaer. The story begins with the arrival of Nat Blake, a shy young orphan who used to earn a living playing the violin. We are introduced to the majority of the characters through his eyes. Personal relationships are central to the school, and diversity is celebrated. Jo's Boys, and How They Turned Out is a sequel to "Little Men". In it, Jo's "children," now grown, are caught up in real world troubles. The book mostly follows the lives of Plumfield boys who were introduced in Little Men, particularly Tommy, Emil, Demi, Nat, Dan, and Professor Bhaer and Jo's sons Rob and Teddy, although the others make frequent appearances as well. The book takes place ten years after Little Men. Dolly and George are college students dealing with the temptations of snobbery, arrogance, self-indulgence and vanity. Louisa May Alcott (1832-1888) was an American novelist and poet best known as the author of the novel Little Women (1868) and its sequels Little Men (1871) and Jo's Boys (1886). Henry James called her "The novelist of children... the Thackeray, the Trollope, of the nursery and the schoolroom."

Women Challenge The Lie written by Regina Sara Ryan and has been published by SCB Distributors this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2017-02-02 with Body, Mind & Spirit categories.
This book invites women of all ages into a conversation that challenges the pervasive lie of “never good enough.” This common subtext of modern life undermines a woman’s appreciation of her own inherent beauty and goodness. The authors recommend 8 Radical Moves that women can make, alone or ideally in the good company of other women, to take on this challenge, to deepen this conversation. The Moves are radical because they aim directly at the center of a woman’s being, the inner space of her true nature, her basic goodness, rather than because they require any extreme actions. Nonetheless, the conviction that “never good enough” is a lie requires more than lip service. The authors guide readers in identifying the courage, strength and love they already possess, but habitually deny, to embrace and live by this conviction of self respect, day to day in mind, body and heart. They further encourage women to make this stand with and in the presence of other women to increase everybody’s likelihood for success. Regina Sara Ryan, author of numerous books in wellness, women’s studies and spirituality (Wellness Workbook; Woman Awake; Igniting the Inner Life) is an elder in her seventies. Shinay Tredeau, a yoga teacher, lifestyle coach, dancer and emerging writer is a “millennial” in her twenties. Together, they bring to this warm and personal treatment a synergy of years of experience in contemplative spiritual practice and dynamic body discipline. Their message is addressed to their sisters, mothers, friends and students, of all ages; to any who suffer from the dis-ease of self-hatred in some form. Each of the 8 Radical Moves provides a slightly different access to clearer self-understanding, leading to self-compassion. For some, the Move to “Inhabit Your Body” will be key to claiming (or reclaiming) a more loving relationship with themselves. For others, the Move called “Learn to Fly” will be just the encouragement needed to refine a spiritual search. Other topics include: • the danger of comparisons with other women • the need to face dark emotions, with compassion • the power of friendship in the quest for self-acceptance • the use of journal writing to articulate developing truth • gratitude as a way of life. This straightforward and challenging narrative is filled with dozens of personal stories, making it ideal for women’s groups and book clubs to study and practice.
